    3. Can someone help me with this town name please? In the 1871 UK Census the family of Irish-born James Martin & Mary Martin (nee Dignan) were living in Whitekirk & Tynninghame, East Lothian County, Scotland, and the birthplace of daughter Mary was listed as "North Chideock, Haddingtonshire." Now, there is a well-known North Chideock in Dorset, England. Is there a North Chideock -- or a town resembling that name -- in East Lothian County (the former Haddingtonshire)? The two eldest daughters (Bridget and Catherine) were listed as born in Ireland, like the parents, and all other children except for Mary were listed as born in Prestonkirk, ELN, SCT. The 1861 UK Census, incidentally, had different birthplaces listed for daughter Catherine (in N. Berwick) as well as Mary (in Prestonkirk), with the surname of the family misspelled Merton (as per Ancestry.com). Did the estate owner in OverHailes/East Linton/Prestonkirk also own one in Dorset? The family worked farms in Prestonkirk, Whitekirk & Tynninghame, and Whittingehame parishes, ELN, SCT. I've also cross-posted this to the SCT-EAST-LOTHIAN-L listserv. I am also trying to trace other Irish from counties Leitrim, Sligo and Roscommon, Ireland, to East Lothian County, Scotland... Martin/Kilmartin/Gilmartin, Duignan/Dignan/Degnan, McNally, Bohan, etc. Happy to hear from you. Thanks in advance, Bill

    3. Hello Julie, Could it be KILEITH or KENLEITH which is up and over the Pentland Hills towards Balerno and Bavelaw? This was next to the northernmost parts of the parish of Penicuik. We have an Alexander WILSON on our family tree who was a blacksmith there http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kosmoid&id=I15490 http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_1st_list.html here is a link to the Edinburgh OS map from 1855. Look at sheet 32. South west of the city, a bit south of Balerno and Currie. A possiblry related blacksmith from there "General Wilson" became an advisor to the Russian Government in the 19th century and developed many industries and state workshops, with flax spinning along the lines of the business found on the Water of Leith at Malleny.. Haven't seen the text image myself at scotlandspeople. 3. Hello Julie I had a look at the image of the birth on Scotlands People and agree that the placename looks like "Khime" - most unusual. It was presumably a farm or a small hamlet which no longer exists today. You could have a look at this online book about Penicuik that I found by Googling Penicuik: http://www.electricscotland.com/history/penicuik/index.htm You could also try contacting the Penicuik Historical Society. The only contact details I could find for them were on this page: http://www.penicuikpapermaking.org/contactus.html Rhoda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julie McDonald" <jm751802@bigpond.net.au> To: <MIDLOTHIAN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 18, 2010 10:37 AM Subject: [MIDLOTHIAN] Help with Placename in Penicuik >I have a record of John Veitch and Janet Crawford from the LDS film of BDMs >in Penicuik - birth of their son John 1787. 3. Barbara I would try the East Lothian List. North Berwick is in East Lothian and the name of the road is 'St Baldred's Road'. If I remember rightly, this is a street of fairly large houses; did your Douglas Crawford have his own bakery business? North Berwick is about 20 miles east of Edinburgh and is within the Edinburgh commuter zone. There was a well-known baker called Crawfords in Edinburgh in the 1950s and '60s. I think they had a shop and restaurant on the North Bridge, beneath what was then the North British (now Balmoral) Hotel. They used to make the most wonderful chocolate eclairs and cream cookies! Have never tasted anything like them since. 3. Sheena Your list is of interest to me. My school lay at the end of Warrender Park Terrrace at the top of the Links (I used to walk along Warrender Park Terrace on the way to school). Our head science teacher (in the 1950s/'60s) was a Mr Brash who I think had been at the school since the end of the 1920s. I wonder if he was the J Brash living at No 38.
