    3. Try the Hugh Wallis IGI site. I only contains extractions and not submissions to the IGI (and is therefore, more accurate). Click on the hot link under "What is a Batch? and then select the country you are searching. >From there you can go to the county, and then to the parishes. Once you have selected the parish, you will get to a page that asks for your search criteria. I don't fill in the box with a name, I just click on Submit Query, and I all of the records for that parish in those time frames. Much easier than going thru the Family Search IGI and weeding out the submissions, which may be inaccurate. Hello Neville I thought all my birthdays had come at once when I found I could list the childrens names. What a great help it is. To list the children of a couple on the IGI go onto familysearch.org I shall use your John SEATON and Margaret PATRICK as an example. Enter ONLY the following fields, no dates. Father - John SEATON Mother - Margaret PATRICK Region - British Isles Country - Scotland Click on SEARCH. The following children should be listed: John Patrick Seaton b. 17 May 1860 Inveresk with Musselburgh, ML William Seaton b. 24 June 1865 Inveresk with Musselburgh, ML Margaret Seaton b. 27 June 1863 Inveresk with Musselburgh, ML. You will note that they don't always come up in date order. Let me know how you get on. Sheila.

    3. Hi Lynne You can buy parts of these records. Go to the "what now" (image of question mark with green boarder) link on the return search pages, and it tells you how to contact them. Give them a bit of background info, with his wives and childrens names, where he lived etc... They will give you a quote for getting the entire file, but for me, when I ordered from them, they broke it down and just let me buy the part I was interested in (when I bought a court file re my family) it only cost 10 pounds. If you tell them you want to pay by credit card, they send you an email address to send them your cc info. Just be sure, since they don't have a secure site that you break up your cc info into 2 emails, or you can call them too. They are quite good there! 3. Neville, I have had another look at the Seatons on the IGI. John Seaton married Margaret PATRICK on 31 December 1858 in Edinburgh. Their children were: John Patrick Seaton b. 17 May 1860 in Inveresk w. Musselburgh Margaret Seaton b. 1863 William b. 24 June 1865 all Inveresk. The records are extracted not submitted so you'll be ok there. Do you know how to find the children of a couple on the IGI Family Search? Sheila. 3. Jacquie - I had a look at the transport records on Ancestry, and they show two Duncan McArthur's transported from Glasgow: 1) Duncan McCarter/McArthur transported from Glasgow to Australia in 1826 for life, and 2) another Duncan McArthur transported to Australia in 1831 for seven years. Are those the records you are referring to? I do not find a third Duncan McCarter record for 1818. Both of these men would have been too late for my Duncan. He disappeared in 1817. Duncan's wife was expecting their last child, George McCarter who was born 27April 1817 at Ruchlaw Mains, Whittingehame. Someone paid for a mortcloth for his daughter, M[ary] McCarter 13 July 1817 in Whittingehame parish. His widow began collecting from the poor accounts in August 1817 and continued collecting until her death. There seem to have been more deaths listed in the summer of 1817 at Whittingehame, so I expect there was some type of sickness that went thru the village. I have assumed that Duncan died then, but it is always possible something else happened. If you could tell me where you found the reference to the third Duncan McCarter dated 1818, I would much appreciate it. 3. Hello Irene I have no connections with any of your families, but you should be able to find out quite a lot about the Penningtons by using the Scotlands People website. It is a pay site, but PENNINGTON is a fairly uncommon name in Scotland, so you should be able to find out quite a lot without spending too much money. For example, the marriage index has a George PENNINGTON marrying an Annie WOOD in Edinburgh in 1877. There is also a John PENNINGTON marrying a Jane SMITH in Edinburgh in 1878. The images of both marriage entries may be downloaded on the site (this may not be your John if he married an 'Agnes'). The birth index includes the birth of a Jessie McQueen Ross PENNINGTON in Edinburgh in 1902. The image of the entry is available to download. And the death index has the death of Henry Arthur PENNINGTON aged 71 in Edinburgh in 1935. The image is available to download. Henry Arthur PENNINGTON junior died in Edinburgh in 1974 aged 79. The image is not available for privacy reasons, and you would need to order the certificate from the General Register Office for Scotland. I only looked for these few. There are probably many more to be found on the BMD indexes. 3. Rhoda - I am not at all sure where Duncan was born. Both of his wives were born in Dunbar. He and maybe a brother, John show up in the records in the late 1890's, but I have no idea of his age or his birth. 3. My GGG Grandfather was transported to Tasmania for life in 1836. He was still alive (in Tasmania) in 1853 but his wife was entered as a Widow in the 1851 (Cupar, Fife) Census. 3. I have no reason to think Duncan left his family or that he was transported. The money collected and paid out from the Whittingehame parish poor fund specifically mentions each person receiving assistance. Some are women listed alone, or women and children, or widows and children, or orphans. For example, money was paid out to Jean Allen and daughter, in distress; Widow Douglas, Susan Nielans, Christian Bertram, Mary Brown, and Widow McCarter's children and Widow McCarter's rent. I should think the church elders were consistent in their description - either the woman was a widow or she was not. I don't know about the census takers - whether they were all consistent in their entries - or whether other parishes listed women and widows differently. Duncan disappeared or died in 1817. I don't think emigration to Australia began until 1820, and I don't know when prisoners began to be transported to Tasmania, but I think it was much later than 1817. Perhaps he could have been sent to Canada or So Africa. I suppose Duncan could have abandoned his family, but my gut feeling is that he died. Its not that important to my research as I'm looking for his lineage and will probably have to go thru collateral relatives to figure it out. It would be interesting to know though. 3. You can buy the records from NAS. Contact them ask them for a quote - provide the file numbers. I got the Robert Mitchell/ Elizabeth Mitchell (court case, ordered and paid for within a day, and in the mail) I've ordered from them before, very good!
