Looking for anyone who has come across Thomas NICOLSON and wife HARRIETT MABON. Thomas was born in app 1796 to Thomas NICOLSON and Elizabeth BAXTER. As far as I can tell the family appears to have started in Berwickshire before moving to Prestonkirk, East Lothian (where Thomas and Harriett were married in 1823) and then onto Edinburgh around 1837. One of their sons, Francis (1837-1907), married Margaret SHANKS and emmigrated to Australia. If anyone has any info on these familes or if you can look in any of the censuses (I am still waiting for scotlandspeople or freecen to help me out!) I would be most grateful. Don, I could not find them in the 1881 census but did find them at familysearch.org . RICHARD PARK - International Genealogical Index / BI Gender: Male Marriage: 10 FEB 1865 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland 1. JOHN MARTIN PARK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 11 APR 1874 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland 2. ANDREW PARK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 19 OCT 1868 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland 3. WILLIAM PARK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 03 AUG 1866 Kirknewton And East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland 4. RICHARD PARK - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 01 APR 1871 West Calder, Midlothian, Scotland With all of these dates, you could go to scotlandspeople.gov.uk. This is a fee based site but well worth the money. You get actual certificate images which you can print out. Here in the states it is the equivalent of about $9-$10. On the marriage certificate for Richard and Elizabeth you would get their ages and both their parents names. Scottish certificates are a wealth of information. Good Luck with your search. Nellie McIntyre Park was born Feb 28, 1888, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (nee Rae) Park. Richard Park was a miner @ Kings Cavel. I would appreciate some help to determine the ages of these parents, i.e. census lookups, plus any additional info available. The family included the following children : Richard, Stanley, William, Harry, Andrew, Minnie, Blanche and Nellie. Thank you for your kindness. Don
Looking for John Manson, age 58, a ship's blockmaker who was living at 11 Sheriff Brae, South Leith on the 1861 census. Specifically, I need to know the place of birth for John Manson (b.c. 1804). Does it show Midlothian or "outside of county"?
Keith, I'm not sure where Greyfriars Road would be, but could it instead be a reference to Greyfriars Place? This name appeared in about 1851 as a side name for a redevelopment in the Southern section of Candlemaker Row, between the kirkyard gate (Greyfriars that is) and the Flodden Wall. Duncan, Dundee
Many thanks for your reply Forrest... and for the updated URL for your link to the Parish Maps of the Lothians. Jim
Can anyone tell me whether there is or was a Grayfriars/Greyfriars Road in Edinburgh? I have found a reference to an uncle of mine living at 13 Grayfriars Road in 1938 and am anxious to follow it up. Thanks all. KeithRyan

Since I scanned these maps and made them available on-line, the National Library of Scotland has put some of its maps on-line at http://www.nls.uk/maps/index.html and if you haven't had a look at them already, I'd certainly recommend visiting their collection. Hello Fellow-Listers: Until such time as I find out more, here are a couple of sites worth noting passed along to me off-list. Perhaps others may benefit from this information. 1) http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/forrestdale/Parishes.html .. but it is not available today. I've bookmarked it from previous vists and it is a good one for the Lothian Parishes in general, including those of the General Edinburgh Area but the maps (as far as I know) do not give the Parish Districts of the Old City "core") 2) the site which does, and which is *just* what I was looking for is as follows (thanks Mary!) http://hometown.aol.co.uk/russellalb/index.html. Does anyone know of an on-line map of the above? I'd appreciate knowing the URL Thanks Jim Arnott
Greetings from a newbie, I am researching Elizabeth LAW or MEARNS who married Archibald ATKINS , mid 1800's Also would some kind soul please tell me offline the name of the list that deals with the Dundee area. I cannot find it in the Rootsweb list! regards, Don HORSEY Shepparton 3630 Australia
I recently read an 1768 OPR. If I'm interpreting the handwriting correctly: 1) What would the profession/trade be of my ancestor who was listed as being the "improver to the Earl of ____________"? On the OPR marriage listing, he was listed as "Mr. ____" and his bride as "Miss ____", which seemed to be different from all other listings on the same page. Thank you in advance! Carol
I have just returned home after spending time with family where I had occasion to sort through my parents belongings. While going through old photos I came across a number of quite old post cards of Lasswade. I am wondering if Lasswade has a historical society who might be interested in copies of these. My grandfather left Scotland in the early 1900's was born in Lasswade in 1869 so I am assuming they date from around that time. Regards Ellie

At the end of the article she says: "Panmure House, which was a laundry at the beginning of the present [20th] century, is now used by the Social Work Department as a non-residential centre for groups of young people between twelve and seventeen years old."
