    3. Hi Leslie: There's a similar resource for several countries at http://iigs.rootsweb.com/bdm/ (at the bottom of the page are links to the specific country pages). -----Original Message----- From: Leslie Hastings [mailto:leslie@kodiak-web-design.com] Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2004 9:39 PM To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MLN] Free extra names - BMD and census I've just finished the first installment of a project I've been meaning to tackle for a long time. You know those two extra names you get whenever you download a birth record from Scotland's People? I've been collating these (and others) into a spreadsheet. It's early days, but have a look and see if there's anybody there you'd like more information on. I'll be adding to it, but not tonight! The spreadsheet is at a link on http://www.recordinspector.co.uk/freebies.html And feel free to spread the word. Cheers, Leslie -- Kodiak Web Design http://www.kodiak-web-design.com

    1. 1861 and/or 1871 Census lookup request
    2. Leslie Hastings
    3. Hello list; I am back after a bit of an absence... I wonder if there is anyone out there who could do an 1861 OR 1871 census lookup for me. I'm looking for a family of Wilsons, most likely in Edinburgh. Thomas WILSON (head) was posted to Dublin with the Scots Greys in 1860, but his daughter Barbara Herkes WILSON was born in Edinburgh in 1863, so I am hoping he was there in 1861 as well. His wife's name was Helen (or Ellen) WILSON (nee McINTOSH). I know only of the three of them. I have their marriage record from Dublin (1860), but cannot find either one of them after this except for Thomas' death in 1871 (15th April - the census was dated 2nd April that year). Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can help. Leslie ======== Record Inspector http://www.recordinspector.co.uk

    1. Re: Janet CHURNSIDE
    2. Duncan Smith
    3. Hugh, I appreciate the valid word of warning when you say ... "A word of caution on Janet Churnside. Chirnside (i not u) is a small town southeast of Haddington. Be sure the name is right and not picking up a home parish as part of a name." As Black's surnames mentions - the name CHIRNSIDE (and many variants) derives "from the place of this name in Berwickshire". In the case that I quoted - of a Janet CHURNSIDE marrying Benjamin THOMSON in 1826 - I have already found other supporting evidence to suggest that this was in fact her family name. I believe that she is the baptism referred to in the IGI (10 Mar 1799 Cockpen - parents David CHURNSIDE & Isabel HENDERSON). I have also found her in the 1851 census at 32/2 Arthur Street, St Cuthberts - aged 50, born Cockpen - in which she is listed as the wife of Benjamin THOMSON, but described as Janet CHIRNYSIDE. Their eldest son Benjamin (born abt 1826/7 Dalkeith) married Jane SMITH on 17 Jun 1851 at the United Presbyterian Church, Infirmary Street, Cowgate - and they named one of their children Jessie CHURNSIDE Thomson (born 13 Sep 1860). So in this case, I suspect that I am safe in concluding that her maiden surname really was CHURNSIDE. Duncan, Dundee
