    1. BUCHAN and HISLOP FAMILIES
    2. K.D, MacCallum
    3. Hello All I am new to this list and am hoping that someone will be able to help me with my family history research. My Gt gt gtgt grandfather Alexander Hislop, a tailor in Leith, who married Agnes Buchan on 01/04/1821 in Leith South. Agnes was born I think, in Liberton on 7th August 1794 . If I am right then Agnes's father was McKenzie Buchan and mother Mary Stobo (OPR INDEX Births & Christenings 1553-1854) but I have not managed to confirm this. Is any lister able to advise me as to how to proceed with my search, please? I know Agnes Buchan had a brother Matthew as I have a family photograph album from him which is inscribed to his nephew " To Captain George Hislop to remind him of his uncle Matthew Buchan". George passed his Master's Ticket in Sunderland in1852 after marrying in Tynemouth, North Shields in 1848. Only a few of the photos are named. One is of a group of young soldiers from the Crimea war. Were battalions of the "Pal" type for this area and is it possible to trace any family through military records? The Liberton website has not given any reference to a Buchan or Hislop other than a gravestone inscribed to a Marion Brown / Sneep family 1792, with a father in law James Hislop, burial on May 10th 1799 included at the base. I do not know if there is any family connection here. If anyone is able to assist me in any or all of my queries, I would be most grateful. In anticipation Evelyn MacCallum

    3. It was with some interest that I read the following email, and I would like to pose a question here... Just what records were you looking at? If they were records of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), then the segment below is a copy/paste from the screen regarding the Church's member records... "Microfilm of original records in the LDS Church Historian's Office, Salt Lake City. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May print only direct ancestor and those born 95+ years ago. All other information must be crossed out." These are the only restrictions on searching Church Members records. If the records you were searching for were general ones, then you are incorrect... all those records are for each and everyone of us to search. If you go to www.familysearch.org - click on the search tab then click on family history library catalog - once there you can search for anywhere in the world, and if the Church has filmed documents there then the films will be available to all. 3. Evelyn, IGI has the following: Matthew Buchan b. 1 Apr 1796, Liberton Agnes Buchan b. 7 Aug 1794 Liberton. In IGI Agnes Marriage to Alexander Hislop also includes McKenzie Buchan as the bride's father. Matthew Buchan m. Christian Renton 24 May 1822 St Cuthbert's MLN McKenzie Buchan m. Mary Stobie (Stobo?) 8 Oct 1788 Edinburgh Parish. This is an LDS patron submission??? Mary Stobie b. 3 Sept 1764, Associate Session Church, Dalkeith MLN d/o Matthew Stobie and Mary Cochrane. Other children - Helen, Agens, James, Matthew. You would know if these names repeat in the children of Hislop/Buchan. The Scots tended to follow a naming pattern but it was not carved in stone. However some of the names are likely to repeat. You would need to visit an LDS family history center to check out the OPRs for these parishes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "K.D, MacCallum" <kemac@tiscali.co.uk> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 14, 2004 3:26 PM Subject: [MLN] BUCHAN and HISLOP FAMILIES > Hello All > > I am new to this list and am hoping that someone will be able to help me with my family history research. > My Gt gt gtgt grandfather Alexander Hislop, a tailor in Leith, who married Agnes Buchan on 01/04/1821 in Leith South. > > Agnes was born I think, in Liberton on 7th August 1794 . 2. Eleanor Robertson
    3. Thanks for your help. Whitehill Street runs from the shopping mall at Fort Kinnaird right along to the bridge where the new railway station is in Newcraighall. Numbers 56/58 would be the very last houses opposite the church and behind the church is the miners club. The odd numbers were on the church side and they were demolished in the 50's I think. I find this a bit confusing too as I class this area as Inveresk although as I went past the other day the sign for Musselburgh is further on. Thanks for all your info. Regards Eleanor -----Original Message----- From: Kodiak Web Design [mailto:kodiak@kodiak-web-design.com] Sent: 14 December 2004 00:07 To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MLN] 56 Whitehill Street Newcraighall Answering my own question, here's an excerpt from "The Place Names of Edinburgh": "WHITEHILL (Newcraighall) is shown thus on /Blaeu/ 1654 and was the original name of NEW HAILES, re-named in 1708 when it was acquired by the owner of Hailes, near East Linton. /Knox/ 1812 shows Hailes but also Whitehill at Wanton Walls; and this gave the names of WHITEHILL MAINS to the farm, WHITEHILL STREET to the row of cottages shown on /Ordnance survey/ 1852 as already developing beside the road earlier shown on Roy 1753, and WHITEHILL TERRACE to a row on the opposite sied, suppressed in the redevelopment of the mining village in 1980. WHITEHILL ROAD, also figured on /Roy/, is named as the road leading to Whitehill Mains. The place name is Anglian /hwit hyll/ or Scots /white hill/, evidently referring to a hill which, perhaps by reason of grassiness, showed up as paler amid the surrounding heathy landscape: possibly it was the knowe on which Whitehill House was later built; or else it may have been the low but prominent hill that rises to a summit in the west of Whitehill Mains." The area, known as Newcraighall, is in Portobello. There is still a Whitehill Street there, but I can't tell from the map I currently have open which street it is. The "Wanton Walls" (meaning "intermitent springs or wells) also shows up on this current map, and there is still a Miner's institute in the area as well. I can't help with your quest to learn when the cottages were removed, but next time I'm in Portobello I'll have a look for the area. It appears, though, to have been the way they were going, as the companion cottages were removed in 1980. Hope this is of some help.
