    1. Website to find unknown distant cousins using 1881 census
    2. J D v Dods
    3. Hi everyone, I don't know if you have heard of this site. Several months ago I read about it on some Yorkshire lists. It's a site that you enter details of your ancestors or blood relatives ( siblings, cousins etc of your ancestors), as they appear on the 1881 census (there is a place to put additional info like maiden name or the name on the census shows as Eliza and its really Alision, or the real age of the person). If it finds a match with someone who has put in exactly the same person as you, you can then contact each other. The guy on the YKS list asked if anyone wanted a referral to join this site, I waited a few weeks as he got swamped with replies, he never got back to me. I never followed it up but just read two articles on it in some family history mags, so have joined. The site covers the 1881 census for Scotland, Wales and England, and plans to add other census during next year. It’s free to join. Sometime next year they may add a "full" membership fee, that will give additional benefits to those who pay compared to the free loaders. I have just found out if you enter at 50 direct ancestors and blood relatives before the 9th of January you get free full membership for 2005, its not hard, I've got 21 direct ancestors and 31 blood relatives so far, & I've got many more to go. The sites address is WWW.lostcousins.com or if you wish me to provide you with a referral code, please email me. cheers John Dods New Zealand ===== Proud to be a transcriber for the freeCEN Project and volunteer for Random Acts of Geneological Kindness Ask me how you can contribute to either of these worthy projects or for other ways of helping our hobby. 3. Hi List, My grannies sister Isabella Armitage married John Logan Currie in Edinburgh in 1905. I was wondering whether anyone on the list has this Currie in their family. John Logan Currie was born 1885 and was the illegitimate son of Isabella Currie (born 1855 Cockpen). Her parents were John Logan Currie and Helen Brown who married 1849. I believe Johns parents may have been Andrew Currie and Mary Logan. Best wishes Evelyn

    2. Dear Marion, I saw your recent listing of names you are researching on the Midlothian rootsweb list and I would like to ask about the Nicol family you are searching for. I too am looking for Nicols and I guess the easiest thing to ask is do you have a David Nicol that married Lillias Smeaton (we think from Tranent) about 1835 and did any of your Nicols immigrate to Canada (Ontario, specifically) around 1850? Thank you very much. Penny Penny Nicol James Katy, Texas

    3. Allison, I'm up to 37 spellings of my mother's maiden name..... and 43 of one of my brick wall names (spelled Batchelder on the woman's marriage record). To give this a Midlothian connection, you don't want to know how many ways McGee (MacGee, McGhie, Magee, and so on....) was spelled in various mid/late 19th century Edinburgh records. So three different spellings is nothing! Just makes the hunt more interesting ;-) If you want ideas for searching in NY, email me off-list and I'll try to help. 3. Hello Everyone, I am facing a challenge with my great grandmother's maiden name. On her marriage certificate to Daniel Ross, it is listed McNally. On the VERY SAME certificate, her parents are each listed McInally (with an I). When I look up all the children's birth cert., the informant my great grandfather, gave both versions several different times each. I will check the church records in Uphall when we are there - would they be any different from the SR marriage certificate? I have searched birth records with an asterisk. There is only one birth certificate from Scotland that looks palusible in that it matches her parents first names and her mother's maiden name (Muirhead). This one lists yet a third spelling McNalley (with an e). I don't feel this is enough to make sure I have the right person. Adding to this is the thought that half the family believes that she was not born in Scotland at all, but in Ballymena, Ireland. I have not been sucessful finding a database to look. The No. Ireland gov website indicated recored are few and not for that time period. This piece of information may a been a 'cover' as she was originally married in the Catholic Church but changed everything to Presbyterian at some point to 'allow' her husband to head the Shale Miner's Local (this from one of her older children). Her youngest daughter told me years ago her mother was "from the Protestant stronghold of Ballymena, Ireland." I have been unsuccessful in locating her death certificate as she died in the US - unable to return to Scotland due to WWII. There is no record on scotlandspeople.gov for a foreign return under any spelling. We have corresponded with each of the boroughs of the City of New York and they do not have anything for her. Of course, we've been searching for the McNally version. We are certain she died there, my mother and aunt were present and the wake was at their house in the Bronx. I will look at her tombstone that was errected in Scotland when we are there in Feb, but I'm not sure I'd trust that spelling as it's from yet another informant. Is there another source that I can look for (for the 1886 time period, she'd be about 18) that would have her name as SHE gave it?? From what I understand, she did not attend advanced schooling. I feel very suspicious. At what point do I accept what is our there and go with the McNalley spelling? If each of her birth, marriage, death records has a different spelling, how does that figure in genealogy? Are genealogical challenges typically this convoluted?? :) Thanks for any suggestions you can offer, and Merry Christmas to all! Allison

    3. Different school question. I have a grandfather who was the Headmaster of Haddington school(s)? in the late 1790's through early 1800's. I have come up with nothing to help substantiate this, aside from a 1807 newspaper article when he took a position in Dumfries which stated this was his background. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also wish all the happiest of holidays and best wishes for a prosperous 2005! I am endeavouring to trace staff records for this period. I've tried a "google" search and while the L&E comes up a few times the hits refer to a much earlier time frame and tend to be about particular vessels etc. I hope some-one can point me in the right direction.
