    3. BTW where are you? We are only 30 miles from Uphall and have friends living in the next village of Dechmont. Robin I'm in Tampa, Florida; but will be visiting family in Uphall in February. Leslie, we hope to get to Almond Valley Farm (in Livingston, I believe). Yes, it's a small world! Allison

    3. <<Looks like you should be on the West Lothian list asking the folks there about your Uphall families And then try the Renfrewshire list too. Robin>> Robin, Hmmmm, I thought I was! When I went on the ScotlandGenWeb project webpage specifically for West Lothian, http://www.scotlandgenweb.org/~westlothian/mail.html and click to access the mailing list - it sends me to Midlothian and identifies this list as being for: "MIDLOTHIAN-L Topic: the counties of East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian, Scotland" Is there some other West Lothian list out there? Thanks, Allison

    2. Hi Robin I saw your comment below: <<Looks like you should be on the West Lothian list asking the folks there about your Uphall families>> Maybe you haven't realised this is the West Lothian List or at least the only one that exists that covers the area, hence why I joined it. I quote from the entrypage to the list: "Topic: the counties of East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian, Scotland, Great Britain." Just in case anyone feels unwelcome Gillian White

    1. 1851 census Fleshmarket Close, Edinburgh - STEPHENSON family
    2. Gil & Sonia Murray
    3. Hello! Could SKS who has access to the 1851 census of Edinburgh please tell me if the Stephenson family were living at Fleshmarket Close, and what information is given - in particular, the birthplaces in England of Hugh and Margaret. Without knowing where they came from I can't trace back. In the 1841 census, FreeCen shows my Stephensons - widower Hugh Eskew STEPHENSON and children - were at Fleshmarket Close. Hugh and his daughter Margaret were listed as born in England, and I know that his daughter Isabella (who married James POCOCK JR. at the Free Kirk in 1839, recorded St. Cuthberts) was born at Ancrum, and his son William, who married first, Helen ANDERSON and second, Barbara THOMSON, was born at Hawick. Hugh was the widower of Jemima WHILLANS, who died in 1834 at Smailholm. His son Hugh had moved out and was a tea dealer in Edinburgh in 1841. Known children of Hugh Eskew Stephenson and Jemima Williams were Margaret, Jane, Isabella, William, Hugh, Elizabeth, and James. Does anyone know who the other children married? I wonder if Hugh Stephenson was, like James Pocock Sr., a Cameron Highlander, pensioned out after the Peninsular Wars and Waterloo! Your help would be very much appreciated. All the best, and Happy New Year! Sonia Murray Biloxi, MS USA

    3. <<How old was she in 1901 and what was the family group?>> Robin, it's hard to read as it was crossed out several times, but she looks to be 33 years of age in 1901. <<So we would persevere with scotlandspeople and try as many variations as you can come up with. Working back in time step by step is essential to be sure the family is the same ..... We went off on a wrong trail for generations because we were not rigorous enough about which John B we were looking at .. Then a chance review 10 years later when the census index came available online showed us our mistake ..which we could have avoided in the first place.>> All right. I'll persevere with scotlandspeople. This choosing the wrong person is exactly what I am afraid of.... I did check the 1891 census for Daniel Ross (since I know his name and birthdate correctly from his birth and marriage certs). Mary would have been married to him for 5 years or so by then. And although there were 6 entries, none are correct. I did not restrict the search geographically at all. I also searched 1881 for Mary McNally, McNalley and McInally and there are none that fit. Any entry listed had parents that did not match either parent listed on her marriage certificate. I guess there could be errors with repsect to how old they were or said they were, so I'll need to go back and open up the search criteria, perhaps. <<Not sure you said where this family is .. Have you tried the Valuation rolls or local trade street directory ... We found a missing 1901 HIRD family in Dundee thanks to help from the Dundee City Library Local Studies Staff and I suspect there are similar great folk in Edinburgh Dalkeith or wherever your family should be.>> The family was in Uphall, WLN in 1901. The older children were born in West Calder WLN. On the 1901 census it lists that Mary was born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire. Are the valuation rolls at the National Archives? That sounds to be a good idea. I do know that Mary was listed as a Draper and owned her own shop. In fact my mother remebers seeing a photograph of her outside the shop (although the photo was lost). Alternately, is there a listing for Coal Miner's? My great grandfather rose quite high in the organizational side of that group. Is my best bet the National Archives? Thanks and best wishes, Allison

Freecen is a volunteer project which is in its early days and is repeating work already done by the GROS who have put the full index on their site for 1881 and 1891 ..and will be putting the earlier ones on sometime in 2005 (despite ambitions to do so early this year) So we would persevere with scotlandspeople and try as many variations as you can come up with. I can confirm that he was indeed a solicitor, then advocate, and then KC. 3. Thank you all for your comments regarding my maiden name challenge. It's very nice to know I'm not alone on this type of problem....37 different spellings - oh my, BJ! You must deserve the fortitude award by now! Robin, I have not found her in the 1881 or 1891 Census - only 1901. So, still looking. FreeCen doesn't give me any hits, but then again, it didn't give me hits for ones that I have in hand, so I'm a bit confused on that one! If anyone has other suggestions for sources for these Census, I'd appreciate it. Between not having a clear physical location for Mary McNalley/McNally/McInally in 1881 and 1891, I've burned up a lot of credits on scotlandspeople.gov and have nothing. Yes, being a novice IS expensive :) Thanks Eleanor, I'll just keep track on the variations and move on! It sounds like the birth cert that matches her parents first names and her mother's maiden is my best bet and now I'll have to substantiate it somehow.
