Hello Gretchen I have the following for a George Baptie. Whether he's your bloke or not, cannot say. Am related to the Archibald and Laing line. George Baptie b 20 April 1860 in Newton parish, MLN, to Elizabeth Laing and Alexander Baptie. (Elizabeth's first husband was Robert Archibald). In 1861 the family was in Millerhill, Newton parish, where Alexander was an Engine Driver. (Railway and/ or Coalmine) Alexander Baptie died before the 1881 census. In 1881 George was 20 yrs old, a general labourer and living with his twice widowed mother and older brother William. Newton parish is next to Dalkeith parish.
