Janice, I had a ggrandfather named John Aitken who was a forester from the Pestonkirk area mid to late 1800,s. Is there any relationship to the Aitkens you are researching? Hello, I had been corresponding with somebody about VAIR ancestors a while back. Whoever it was had suggested to me that there might be a connection to London, as Vair is not a common surname in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, I have lost or deleted the relevant e-mails. I have just found a more detailed marriage record for the first marriage of my ancestor, Helen Vair. As it turns out, her father (Alexander Vair) is listed as "wigmaker in London". Later, at her second marriage in 1797, he was simply listed as "residenter in Edinburgh". I was hoping to reconnect with whoever I was corresponding with, and figure out if we have any mutual connections. Thanks, Graeme Boocock. (Toronto).

Hi, If the photograph was taken of the young man in the kilt in 1836, I doubt if he could also have served in the boer war (ladysmith), which lasted 1889-1902. I would like to thank everyone who has replied to my Posts, I sorry I not said who but i did not receive the replies but read them from browsing at the site, i am hoping that mail will start to come in as i have received one post from the list so will have to see (will also know from sending this) so many thanks, I now have to look at the census for 1891 & 1901 I also now know that Alexander's first wife died & that the 3 children on the 1881 census are his from that marriage I since found one child a Ann Brown Honeyman AITKEN born 8 June 1884 Main St West Calder the Ann Brown is after Alexander's mother Honeyman is after the mother of Ann (Alex's 2nd wife) so very nice of them to be considerate in their names lol, & of course looking for anyone who may have any connections to the family Regards Janice

The list below is sorted by SURNAME. The information contains the parent names of person and the spouse so therefore there are two separate records for each marriage. Janice both Kettle and Kingskettle in Fife are the same place. I took the liberty of checking your entries on the IGI and I personally would take this one "David Honeyman marrying Elizabeth Masterman 25 Dec 1847 Kettle Fife" as more likely since it is a copy of the entry in the OPR, best thing to do is check the OPR yourself. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Your "Betsey Masterdon 31 Dec 1847 Kingskettle Fife" is a submitted entry and they can sometimes be a bit unreliable as you don't know the source. Kingskettle is the same place as Kettle. Spelling differences in registers often occurred..... in 1847, writing was an uncommon skill. The wedding date may not have been recorded, many churches logged only the Proclamations before the marriage took place. When you saw the family in 1881 Census did you notice a David Aitken living close to Alexander? Just ten pages further on in the Census, David bn in the <adjacent> Fife parish of Ceres. The following is a summary, in case anyone else needs the information: A WRITER is a Solicitor, Lawyer, Notary; to do with the law; also Writer to the Signet.
