    3. Thanks Rhona, unfortunately I don't see any connection. The earliest ROURKE I have is Patrick ROURKE and Catherine RILEY who had a son James ROURKE born Ireland about 1827 married Mary (Rose) QUINN in Edinburgh 1852, lived Linlithgow,Edinburgh and Saltoun E Lothian. The McMANUS side starts with Hugh McMANUS and Bridget ? had a son James born about 1824 in Ireland, married Catherine MULHEARNE date of arrival in Scotland unknown but were having children in E Lothian and Berwick during the 1850s and 60s. Best wishes, Olive.

    3. Hi Olive Yes I do have McManus and O'Rorke in my family tree but they come from Edinburgh and Mid Calder etc. My grandmother Sara Jane Molloy d/o Robert Molloy and Sarah Thomas married James O'Rorke s/o James O'Rorke and Mary Early. William Henry Molloy my great uncle married Catherine McManus. I'm not sure because I can't read it but I think her mother Elizabeth Connolly was born about 1866 in what looks like Haddingtonshire on the 1901 census for Mid Calder. Catherine's father Martin McManus came from Ireland and he and Elizabeth were married in Broxburn. 3. Moira It seems to me that it's an abbreviation of 'cautioner' --- if it was a marriage proclamation, the cautioners would deposit money refundable when the couple actually married. The couple would also pay a sum for the poor. 1. MY BRICK WALL
    2. pamelaj.groves
    3. Hello List, I have come to a Brick wall concerning my Paxton family. If anyone has any suggestions that could help me break down my brick wall I would appreciate it. I have gone back to my 3X great Grandfather James Paxton. But can't get back any further as I do not know much about him or when and where he was born? I do know that he married Margaret Currie on February 13, 1817 at Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland. and that he was living at Shoemakers Close, Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland at the time of their marriage. Also that he was a Carter at the time of their marriage. Is there any other records that I could look up please as I am not really sure when James died? As the 1841 census did not say if Margaret Paxton was a widow or not? I know she was by 1851 Census. I think James may have died in 1831 but I am not sure? James Paxton and Margaret Currie had 6 children to my knowledge. Henry Paxton Shoemaker born about 1818 in Edinburgh Marion Paxton also known as Mary Ann born April 26, 1820 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland Agnes Paxton born August 5, 1822 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland Peter Paxton born April 25, 1825 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland Janet Paxton born between 1827 - 1828 in Musselburgh, Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland. And my 2x Great Grandfather James Ferdinand D! ouglas Paxton born December 24, 1830 in Musselburgh, Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland. My 2x Great Grandfather's Occupation was allsorts until later in life when he was a Professional Golf Player like most of his sons. Thank you in advance for any information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves

In the testament dated 1735 of my 5 x great-grandfather, Andrew KEY/KAY, shipmaster and provost of Kirkcaldy, the following appears as owing to him: John Aitkine, Merchant, £4.10s Scots James Miller, Merchant, £4.10s Scots James Mansfield, £9.00s Scots Alexander Davidson, £9.00s Scots Gavine Drummond, Merchant £9.00s Scots John Simson, Merchant £7.06s Scots ---"all as the rents of shops or stands possesst by them in the Parliament House." Can anybody explain where shops and ?stalls were sited in relation to the Parliament House in those days? I presume Andrew Key was in charge of sub-letting the sites. He was also due £1.0s.10d sterling as his proportion of the salary paid to the keepers of the Parliament House, plus various other sums payable by the Society of the Writers to the Signet, the Lords of Session, the Advocats ("as keeper of their gowns") and "the good town of Edinburgh for furnishing Coall and Candle in the Parliament House."
