    2. Alan Ireland
    3. Hi Evelyn, From your Google search you will have found that he was born in 1884 & died 6th May 1977, also the name of his wife and her father. You can also find a picture of him on Google if you click on Images instead of Web. I suggest you try press archives for obituaries, e.g.The Scotsman, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, and also musical journals. These may have sufficient personal details to set you on your way. There was also a biography by Michael Turnbull published in 1992 mentioned on Google. Best wishes, Sheena Ireland -----Original Message----- From: K.D, MacCallum [mailto:kemac@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: 27 February 2005 16:38 To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MLN] Joseph HISLOP, opera singer Hello again Thank you Carol for suggesting Google. 3. Hi Ellie Sorry I may have put you on the wrong track with the last info I sent. I went into the FreeCen census 1841 for Forfar-Angus and found the following:- "Backwynd" Surname First Name Sex Age Occup. Where Born Robert Elizabeth F 38 Loom Weaver Angus Craik Margaret F 12 " Craik Mary F 10 " Craik Joanna F 8 " Craik James M 6 " Regards Carmel ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine McNulty" <macmac3@optusnet.com.au> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2005 9:11 PM Subject: Re: [MLN] CRAIK lookup

    3. Hi Ellie I had a look in the Vital Records Index for James birth. According to the 1881 Census he was 45 then, so that would give his birth as 1836. Going on that I found John Craik and Agnes Thompson had the following children christened:-Mary 1825 in Kirkcudbright, Janet 1828 in Kirkcudbright, William 1830 in Kirkcudbright, Robert 1832 in Kirkcudbright and James 3rd June 1836 in Kirkcudbright. They might be worth looking into. 3. Hi Ellie, I don't think this is the connection you're looking for. Kirkcudbright is on the west coast and the census says he was born in Forfar which is on the east coast. The closest I got was a David Craik born 10 MAY 1835 in Brechin which is in the same county as Forfar, i.e. Angus Would need to look at the Parishes for this period but it is much more likely, regards moira Elaine McNulty wrote: >Thank you Carmel. 1. Burial Indexes + FRASER & SUTHERLAND
    2. Lorraine (araine322)
    3. Hello, I'm looking for anything and everything on Andrew FRASER and Charlotte SUTHERLAND who were married in Canongate in 1800 - at that time Andrew was working as a weaver. Both were born circa 1776 - Charlotte in Dornoch, Sutherland and Andrew in ?? The had 3 sons that I know of - Daniel 1800, Angus 1801 & Donald 1803 all born in Edinburgh. I was wondering if there were any burial indexes for Scotland like that of England. I'd like to find when and where Andrew and Charlotte FRASER were buried/died. I honestly have no idea when or where. It's only a guess, but they died between 1803 and ? I tried to narrow the time down by looking for them on the Freecens for 1841, but couldn't locate them. The only one I found on the 1841 freecens site for Midlothian was for their son Daniel, his wife Elizabeth and their children. Any help that anyone can offer would be more than appreciated. Thanks in advance. Lorraine Sitting here patiently awaiting for the start of our latest snow storm - HURRY UP SUMMER!

    1. Joseph HISLOP, opera singer
    2. K.D, MacCallum
    3. Hello My mother used to talk of musical evenings when the family would gather to hear her uncle Joseph HISLOP sing. Apparently he had a beautiful tenor voice. I know he was from Edinburgh, was a choir boy at St. Giles in 1884. Later he trained several notable opera singers.. I have not been able to find out anything personal such as his parents, siblings, wife, children etc. Is anyone able to tell me where to find out more details, please? Thank you Evelyn MacCallum

    3. Hello Ray Re the second name McKie - it was a common practice to include the surname of an ancestor as a second name in the 1800's. This can be immediate or some name they liked from their ancestors. My grandfather was James Wotton Hislop and I eventually discovered that the Wotton came from my Gt x 4 grandmother's line. Another Gt x 2 grandfather George Robson Kirkley had the Robson from his Gt Gt grandmother. It does offer a clue to former generations and can be very useful when trolling through the IGL site to give an indication of which church records to search. This practise continued well into the 20th Century - my grandmother used it for my father. Good hunting Evelyn

    3. If you go to the following web page you will find the monumental inscriptions in St Michaels Churchyard, Inveresk, up till 1857. This is the parish church of Inveresk (Musselburgh) and is the only churchyard for the immediate area. http://www.ancestor.abel.co.uk/inv/mi1857.html The following is the Inveresk web site of Dr John Robertson who has done a tremendous amount of work on some of the Midlothian parishes. There are links to Newton and several other parishes here. http://www.ancestor.abel.co.uk/Inveresk.html Hope this helps Tom -----Original Message----- From: GBZMOM@aol.com [mailto:GBZMOM@aol.com] Sent: 25 February 2005 04:33 To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Cemeteries Hi Listers, Now that I have been able to find some birth and marriage records for family members, I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to point me in the direction of cemetery information for the 1800's (other than Scotland's people, which I am still not able to use) for Dalkeith, Newton, and /or Inveresk with Musselburgh. Where would I be able to find a list of people buried in these areas? Are there many cemeteries?? As you can tell, I am not from Scotland, have never been there, and am really not sure if these areas are close enough that families might have burial plots no matter where they lived. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, gretchen Michigan, USA ______________________________
