    3. Liz, I have always had the best of assistance from the local authorities when looking for burials. The exception are the large cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh where they get so many enquiries that they will only respond to letters. If you give me the info off list, I will try to guess the LA and get a phone number for you. As I understand it, Moses, Henry & John Louthain/Louthian came to America prior to the American Revolution. In the wills I found the most recent one listed in 31/8/1730. Did all of this family leave Scotland after 1730? Kathy

It is usually a tough chore, local knowledge and the assistance of professionals may prove effective. Note, most burials do not result in a tombstone being found. The local Record Office usually has local residents on staff. Tell me the parish name and I can probably provide the postal address of the registrar, you could write and ask for guidance. Re your letter: * Keep it to a single page if possible! * Say something like, I shall be happy to pay your costs for any postage and photocopying, as appropriate. Having shown willing, and phrased a considerate letter, I have always had a good reply, usually free of charge. Cheers, ALISTAIR M. CAMERON A.A.G.R.A. 2. Hi Just thought I'd add my wee bit to this. I know you are in Australia, so you would have to find someone willing to go to Edinburgh or get someone in Edinburgh to do the lookup for you, but checking the voters roll might help. It is a tricky thing to search for names, but easy for an address. Unfortunately your Mary McNab will only be on the roll if she was over 30 and was still at the same address in 1918 (there were no rolls recorded in the war years - and women only got the right to vote in 1918 if they were over 30). You could check the address pre war as well as there may well have been a husband or father at the address and this could help. The voters rolls are in the Edinburgh room of the central library. _http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/CEC/Recreation/Libraries/Historysphere/EdRoomGuid e/edrmdocs.html#voters_ (http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/CEC/Recreation/Libraries/Historysphere/EdRoomGuide/edrmdocs.html#voters) Gillian White

G'day All, I'm trying to trace my family tree of my Scottish roots and a lot of my ALLAN's from Scotland hailed from Lasswade area (with one family I've been able to locate who moved to Paisley during 1906 - 1934). I've been able to use the Scotland's People searching stuff to find links. However, without having access to new information, and being in Australia, it's becoming increasingly hard to do anything. Can somebody here please let me know if there are any reputable people who are able to undertake research on my behalf at the GROS. Dad really wants to locate a possible relative in Scotland before he makes a trip there later in the year. Any help would be appreciated. James.
