    3. I was just at New Register House when we visited Scotland in February. It's a very popular place these days and it is highly recommend that you make a reservation in advance as the "day of" entries are on a space left basis only. On the scotlandspeople website there's a link for information on visitng and it has lots of good information about what you can bring and what is available. I made my reservation by email and it worked well. You need to arrive for a reservation by 10 am or they will give it away. Lastly, having a seat assigned made getting copies very easy. I would print from the computer assigned to me and went to pay/pick up at the cashiers area. Very close, simple as can be. There is a tea room, but I never got out of the room to see it.... :) I was in the main room (with the dome) and it was very comfortable. A dream come true to have all that information at your fingertips. I got very efficient help from the staff. If you are going next door to National Archives of Scotland take a pencil - they don't allow pens and have strict rules (I think depending on the room you need to be in). I would consult their website for information. Best of luck, Allison Florida, USA

    3. Hello Edith, I'm not sure whether anyone has suggested to you that your Cannon Street is probably Canon Street, as in Canonmills, Canongate etc. The Canons in question were the Augustinian canons of Holyrood who owned the mills. There was a Canon Street in the Canonmills area and I imagine it's still there although I don't have a terribly up-to-date map of Edinburgh. If you look for Canonmills in an online map, you'll find the street. There is a useful book on the derivation of Edinburgh street names put out in 1975 by Edinburgh Corporation City Engineer's Department. I think I've seen it online but I'm afraid I don't know what the URL is. I do, however, have a copy if you want some basic information on any other streets. Anne in Canberra. 1. Irregular Marriages
    2. Alexander Nicol
    3. Hi Listers, My 3x grt grandfather James Nicol was married to Helen Kerr in Edinburgh in 1790. They were subsequently taken to task, in 1791, by the church in Cramond as follows; "This day James Nicol and Helen Kerr were compeared? (called?) before the session and confessed their irregular marriage and produced a certificate of the same dated at Edinburgh 15.5.1790, signed by John Stuart(?), James Nicol his mark and Helen Kerr her mark. James Clark and Jane Campbell witnesses. The moderator rebuked them for their irregular conduct, confirmed their marriage and gave them suitable extortions." Does anyone have information on said John Stuart, why his marriages were Irregular? or know where his records may be kept? Thanks Alex
