Hello! Census indexes for Edinburgh 1851? Is this a name index? If so, can anyone point me to it, or would SKS look up the Stephensons and Pococks for me? I have two rolls of the film at the FHL and am looking page by page for my people - spent three hours yesterday afternoon on 3/4 of the first roll. Didn't find any of them, but copied all the Stevensons and Stevens I found, and will be glad to send the entries if they are of any use to anyone. Happy hunting, Sonia -----Original Message----- From: Catherine Fitchett [mailto:cfitchett@paradise.net.nz] Sent: Friday, April 08, 2005 12:45 AM To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MLN] Re: 1851 census >Hello all, >Please can anyone help, I am trying to trace the three addresses of >these families, from the following references, and any one else residing >with them. >EDINBURGH The new town vol 3 part 2 >1851 census ref 3046 hs 19 st112 bk 9 pg 5 >sc14 >surname TALBOT Where did you obtain these references? If they are from the series of census indexes that I think they come from, the next step is to lookup the reference numbers in the back of the book and it will tell you not only the name of the street but also everyone residing at that address, whether Talbots or not. If you are in contact with the original person who looked up the index, they should be able to take the next step for you. These indexes are very complete. Unfortunately I don't have access to volume 3 or I would look it up for you Catherine
Dear Dorthy, In regard to the infor sent to you from Scotland's People about CHRISTINA SIMPSON, born 1878 with parents JOHN SIMPSON and MARY YOUNG. I am very interested in any infor you have on these names. I have a number of YOUNGS that married SIMPSONS. I don't seeem to have John SIMPSON and Mary YOUNG however. With the infor you have I may be able to place them in the family. Thank you so much, Yvonne bykmarshall@veizon.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorothy Stewart" <stewartdk@sympatico.ca> To: <LANARK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 25, 2005 8:50 AM Subject: [LKS] 1878 BIRTH CHRISTINA SIMPSON- GLASGOW >I just purchased an incorrect birth record from Scotland's People so if any >one interested can send information > > CHRISTINA SIMPSON - BORN 1878 > PARENTS - JOHN SIMPSON & MARY YOUNG > > Dorothy > > > ==== LANARK Mailing List ==== > Lanarkshire GENUKI Home Page > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/LKS/index.htm >
In the 1845 Maps of the Lothian Parishes at http://www.forrestdale.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Parishes.html the parish of Inveresk (and Musselburgh) lies within Midlothian -- also confirmed by http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctbew/Parish/Index.htm Today, I understand, Inveresk and Musselburgh records are maintained by East Lothian Council. Can anyone advise when the switch from one county to the other took place? Thanks Jim Arnott, Canada
Hello Listers Is there someone who can sort out a problem for me, please? After I have done a search on the above web site and am told I have 6 hits, I click the View button. I am then getting a message that reads- "A Variable binding error has occurred" and I have to click cancell and it then returns me to the previous window. I have Outlook Express 6 and I have checked my browser compatibility. I have gone out of the web site and back in and still I get the message. I have accessed this site previously without a problem. There does not seem to be any way to make contact with a person on the web page! Normally I would leave this for a while and then try again but with a time span in use, I do not want to waste time and not make use of the units I purchased. Hello folks, My grandfather was illegitimate and orphaned at 2 years (1871). He was raised by his aunt and uncle in Edinburgh. His mother's father, uncles and aunts lived in a mining village east of Edinburgh. After finding his father named in the Kirk Session Records, I know grandad's birth father lived in the coalmining village too. My question to the list is: What was the social attitude in 1870s in Scotland towards birth fathers and their family? Were they accepted, rejected or did it depend on each individual case? I'd be most grateful for any ideas, suggestions or advice on where to find this sort of information. (I live in Australia.) Thanks Jean

Jacobina: Where did you get the surname of Gascoigne? It s sounds like a French Huguenot name. Hello Gordon It predates the Huguenots . 1066 to be exact. It is an old Norman name. Sir William Gascoigne was the High Sheriff of England. I have a chart showing his tree, which includes the king's of Scotland ,England and Ireland all in the tree . Pity it is not my tree though, I do not know when we came to England, but like all researchers I hope to find the first one. My Husband is the source of the name Jacobina robertgascoigne@cox.net
Hello Doug Thank you for the reply, we could perhaps connect . I just have to find where my WARDLAWS called home. They start in Ratho have half the family there, then move to Kirknewton. One son went to Whitburn ,another to Camnethan.Going back from Ratho they were in Denny, Polmont,Edinburgh, then Currie. I am going to order the Parish Register for Kirknewton & East Calder at the FHS tomorrow as I have a lot of families in that area. I was born about 4 miles from there in Pumpherston. Thanks again Jacobina

Hi again Forgot to mention. The Dunfermline Associate Session is not a Church of Scotland Church so information will not be in Old Parish Registers. Records of this Church would be held in Edinburgh and possibly Dunfermline Library. Jean -- Jean Campbell
