    3. Doug, Don't know if you have completed your research on Elizabeth Sinclair. If you are still looking try the following URL http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I31599&tree=bayanne_ 1 You should be able to hyperlink forward and backward using the bayanne site. Kind regards, John Robertson www.shetlandroots.org Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2001 12:14:36 -0500 From: Douglas Flummer <saxman@siu.edu> To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <3B5B09FC.4A3EAE87@siu.edu> Subject: [MLN] Lerwick Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Thanks for all your help. As it turns out, after I wrote my note last night, I did some thinking, then I did some research on the Genuki site that revealed to me what you are telling me now, that there is a Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. Well, I did a check in the LDS database (just on a hunch), and lo and behold, there they were! At least three generations of Hendersons that I did not have, plus ancestry for Margaret Mail. In fact, I got so many people listed here who lived in the Shetland Islands, cousins, inlaws and all, that I had to quit for the night at one point and start up again today. However, given all that, I still have work to do on links in Midlothian. I still have information on Elizabeth Sinclair to find. A separate contact of mine sent me 1881 census information that shows Robert Henderson's mother and grandmother as living in Dunrossness, Shetland, Scotland with 4 children ages 18, 16, 14 and 12. But Robert, who would have been 20-21, is not here. We also know that Robert and Elizabeth had Oliver Mowbray Henderson in Leith in 1884. My hypothesis is that for whatever reason, Robert had left home to find his way, and made his way to Leith. There I think he met Elizabeth Sinclair and married, with family shortly to follow. So I am working on following up on that. Anyone with any information related to this, let me know. Oh, I love this detective work. It's so thrilling! Doug Flummer Carbondale, Illinois, USA

We had a copy of Vol 1 & 2 at our local Family History Centre, but unfortunately there is a big reorganisation / downscaling going on, and these two volumes have gone - I'm not sure where. I have just done a big hunt on the web and located Vol 1 & 2 (the Old Town and the Canongate) in the Scottish Genealogy Society Library, but not Vol 3 (the New Town). They have Vol 3, parts 1 &2 for sale but not Vol 1 and 2. It is a very extensive index. Vol 3 is 671 pages in total. The purchase price is £55 even without postage which would be considerable since it's a heavy book. In New Zealand, I know that the National Library in Wellington holds copies - I think all three volumes - but I don't get there often The authors are N R & S Carstairs Catherine

The big draw card is "The Times Digital Archive" but also well worth a search is the "Eighteenth Century Collections Online", last time there was free access I managed to download a book of poetry and some plays of my 5 times great-grandfather James Mylne of Lochill, Aberlady, ELN published posthumously in 1790, included in the list of subscribers is Robert Burns. It took 6 months to get here but well worth the wait ! I tried to do the same for the other 2 volumes - Old Town & Canongate ( I think it's called ). Unfortunately we couldn't get them on loan. Anyone living in Edinburgh or visitors there can access all 3 Volumes at GRO and NRH I believe.
