They came from County Leitrim. As you have not mentioned the parents of Hugh and his wives, I guess these may not yet be known to you. It is routine that for deaths in Scotland after 1855, the death entry has fairly comprehensive info which helps family research. You probably know that the IGI deals mostly with births/ marriages- deaths are pretty well ignored. Among the raft of useful facts in the Death register are the names of parents of the deceased incl mother's maiden surname. > My > O'Brien ancestor Hugh was found dead in mysterious > circumstances in his own house on the 1st October > 1873. Found dead on 1st Oct, but how long dead? It may not be certain on what date he died in which case the widow may have poor recall of the days prior to Oct 1. I often find it hard to recall what I did on the day-before-yesterday! > I still think his dastardly second wife "did > him in". Unless journalists were very different in those days, I'd feel wary of trusting any details presented by a local newspaper. You may do well to read the post- mortem report. Cheers, ALISTAIR M. 3. My research interests in West Lothian are Christy and O'Brien. The Christy(Christie) ancestors first show up in the 1851 census. They came from County Leitrim. My O'Brien ancestor Hugh was found dead in mysterious circumstances in his own house on the 1st October 1873. His second wife inherited his money and possessions although she does not seem to have provided an explanation as to what she was doing that particular night. His son-in-law had to come halfway across Scotland to find his body and report his death. There was a post mortem and a report by the Procurator Fiscal. I still think his dastardly second wife "did him in". Is this likely to have been reported in a local newspaper or was the unexplained death of an Irish labourer likely to have been of very little interest? 2. Hi Alistair, I noticed that you mentioned that the IGI does not pay much attention to the death notices. Is there anywhere that we in the US can find death info (besides Scotland's People which I am still unable to access until I get this computer straightened out :) ? ) Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks, gretchen Michigan USA

    3. Greetings to you all Although I have been researching my ancestors for a number of years, I have only recently subscribed to the Midlothian list. I am researching the following family in particular: Flint I have traced this particular family branch back to William Flint, stonemason, married in Closeburn, Dumfries (1780) and buried there (1832) age 84. (D.O.B. abt. 1748 – but where?) This is one of my brickwalls. Flint is not a common name in the Dumfries and Galloway area, earlier and most contemporary Flints seem to be based further north in the Lothians and Lanarkshire, so if anyone else on the Midlothian list is researching Flints I would be interested in sharing information. As William Flint was a stone mason I was wondering if his occupation might be a way through this brickwall (did I just write that!) Best wishes Pat Stanistreet Liverpool Also researching: FLINT - Dumfries, Kirkpatrick Durham; KIRKPATRICK – Cample/Closeburn; PORTEOUS – Ruthwell; BLACK – Tinwald/Durisdeer; DALZELL/DALZIEL – Tinwald; KERR – Dumfries, Old Cumnock; COPLAND/COUPLAND – Dumfries

    2. Liz Dempster
    3. Hello all: I have hit a road block in trying to find the birth of Cecilia Lindsay. Father James Gordon, (writer) mother Ann Gordon, (later Cowie). I have Cecilia's Marriage Record, but have not been able to locate through the IGI or Scotlandspeople her birth. I figure her birth to be around 1843. She was reportedly 20 yrs of age at the time of her marriage in District of Tradeston, Glasgow in 1863. Is there an SKS out there who may be able to take a few minutes to look her up for me. I have found a connection to the Gordon Family here in Canada and it would help both of us to see the information on her birth record. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Liz Dempster Southern Ontario Canada
