Hi Jean, > Sorry no access to 1861 but 1851 gives > > Also in Cochrane Street > Helen Anderson widow age 76 Hawker of bread born Bathgate > Helen Stewart granddaughter aged 17 hand loom weaver cotton born > Bathgate > Ann Stewart granddaughter aged 11 born Bathgate > John Stewart grandson aged 6 born Bathgate. Many thanks for this. I had Alexander Fleming in 1851, but this Helen Stewart is an interesting possible lead. As a result I have just found the above family in Bathgate in 1841 courtesy of FREECEN:- John Stewert 35 Cotton Hand loom weaver West Lothian Janet Stewert 25 Cotton Hand loom weaver West Lothian Hellen Stewert 7 West Lothian Ann Stewert 2 West Lothian But cannot find baptisms for any of them on either Scotlandspeople or the LDS site, nor can I find any of them in 1871. I believe my Helen Fleming nee Stewart was still alive in 1877 because she is not marked as deceased on her daughter Margaret's marriage record and has an occupation which looks something like - mid wife & Prer? Kall Labourer- , but is marked as deceased on her daughter's death record in 1895. Best Wishes Karen
Could it be that he lived with one rellie, but was visiting the other and stayed overnight for some reason - pouring down rain when it was time to go home, perhaps? - and so both listed him? I've seen people enumerated twice in U.S. censuses, but they weren't always taken on the same day - the enumerator asked who slept there on a specific date, but he rode from place to place in a rural area and people might not remember which day a visitor had arrived or left. One of Gil's GGgrandfathers appears in two different states in the 1851 census, in Tennessee visiting his birth family and in Arkansas in his own household. The Scots and English census takers left a form which should have been filled out promptly by someone in the family, but from the mismash of info I've found on my family in London in the 1881, all kinds of mistakes were made! I am fairly sure I have found two entries for the same person, Robert Rough aged 15 and born in England, at two family addresses in the 1841 Edinburgh census. He is recorded with his grandmother at "south back of Canongate" and also with his uncle at 10 Catherine St. I have no reason to believe there were two boys both named Robert the same age in that family. Is this double entry at all common? Cheers Brian Rough ------------------------------------------- Get your free email at ourbrisbane.com now

Haddington is in the County of East Lothian not Midlothian. It is a little like looking in Adelaide for someone who loved in Brisbane. As you give no Christian names or dates I would suggest the following sites: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/ This site allows you to search a specific parish (e.g., Haddington) for the Birth/Christening ("C") or the Marriage ("M") of someone with a specific surname. Searches are carried out with year ranges according to the Batch Number. For example the is an Isabella MacAdam married in Haddington in the period from 1820-1865. The record will give the Spouse's name and the date of the wedding. Follow the URL above. Click on Scotland and on the next screen select, East Lothian. On the next screen Select "H" or scroll down until you find Haddington. You will find a series of Batch Numbers for Christenings and Marriages. Each batch corresponds to a year range. Select the one you want and one the next screen type in the name MacAdam and start your search. This site has undergone sone changes lately and I find that it sometimes returns all the persons with the search name in Scotland on the first try. Go back to the Batch Number page and try again. http://www.familysearch.org/ This site covers the same material as the one above but is organized differently. It is searchable in a number of ways and it is possible to leave sections blank. Go to the URL and select SEARCH. On the next screen select INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX. On the next screen enter your information a start a search. In tracing ancestors in Scotland keep in mind that names often followed a naming pattern. That might allow you to trace back further. You can also ask on the East Lothian site for a Census look-ups as well for the period from 1851 - 1881. Hope this helps you get started. Dear Listers, A friend with a query. Can anyone help? >>>. "Have you ever heard of a Stones Bakery anywhere in Scotland? I had an email yesterday from the lady who I am helping in South Africa who has found out through a cousin that she believes there was a family bible with the names of Macgregor and Mcpherson in it and a connection to this Bakery in Wales(?) and Scotland (apparently cousins of Frederick Smith) All a bit vague but she is desperate for answers re her grandfather... ...I have searched Google but all I could find was a Stones Bakery in Somerset. I said I would email you with the hope you may have a bit of local knowledge or even a Trades Directory.I would image the time slot would be late 1800s to early 1900. Just a wild guess though." >>> I think she may be in the wrong country myself but no Stones unturned etc... Best Wishes, Jane

However as the two parents of the bairn are normally named [with mother maiden surname] you are thus enabled to search the parents' deaths and marriage, both of which normally yield the names of the barn's grandparents, icl. grannies' maiden surnames. The IGI lists a marriage for a John Atkin married to a Mary Ashton in Grappenhall, Cheshire. These possibly are my GGG grandparents. Their son John Atkin my GGgrandfather died in Glasgow. His death record said his mothers name was Mary Daniel. The fathers name was listed as John Atkin a Fustian Cutter. This is correct bases on the 1841 Salford and other census. Census records in Scotland record this families birth towns and ages correctly the same as listed when they were in Salford for other census years. The family I am researching in Salford provided a daughter and a son whose mothers maiden name was Ashton. At this time period they also had a son named John the same age as my GGgrandfather John. But this young Johns occupation was listed as a Fustian Cutter. My John was Gold Beater. I am inclined to think that that a Fustian Cutter would not change his trade to another trade. But on the other hand, I don't think producing gold leaf would require much skill either. This same family in the 1841 census had another son they named Richard Daniel Atkin. Now I wonder, was there a Daniel connection in this family. Mary Ashton had not been married before. In Cheshire some churches had baptismal records that listed both sets of Grandparents. It was my hope this might be the case in Scotland. Some of the records in Scotland do appear to be better than some I have come across in Manchester. So Lads and Lassies, that's my story :)) All my best Mike Morris Toronto Canada Ex Manchester ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alistair Cameron" <acameron@hinet.net.au> To: <MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 6:41 PM Subject: Re: [MLN] Birth records > > > Mike Morris wrote: > > > > Can some kind person tell me if birth records after 1871 give the > > grandparents names? > > Just about NEVER! > > However as the two parents of the bairn are normally named > [with mother maiden surname] you are thus enabled to search > the parents' deaths and marriage, both of which normally > yield the names of the barn's grandparents, icl. grannies' > maiden surnames. > > My reply refers to SCT records dated from 1855. > > Cheers, > > ALISTAIR M. Hi, Everyone - I have just joined the list and am searching for information on my 3x-great-grandfather, Robert Wilson. His widow died in Inveresk in 1858 and is buried in the Churchyard of Inveresk according to the death certificate. Are there any records available that might indicate if Robert Wilson is also buried there? I believe that he died prior to 1841 and I have no information regarding his parents, his birth date, or when he died. Any information greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Mary Traynor USA
Hi, I wondered if anyone can find the following family in 1861 at Bathgate Alexander Fleming bn abt 1830 in Torpichen Helen Fleming (wife) birth and place unknown Margaret Fleming (dau) bn 1857 Bathgate Alexander Fleming & Helen Stewart were married in 1852 in Bathgate. Alexander died in 1869 in Bathgate and I have been unable to find Helen Stewart on the 1871 census or find a possible death record for her. I am hoping that info from the 1861 census, will give me some clues as to her age and place of birth, to narrow down the search. Best Wishes Karen
