One of my Scottish lot, a young woman appears to have been in the same house as he parents, & also at what must have been the home of her employer. I read somewhere, that the Census taking, was over several days anyway, maybe my Gt grandmother forgot where she was several days before the census man called. Looking for any information on a Margaret ROBERTSON born about 1820 in Lasswade who married John PENMAN in 1842. Could her parents be Samuel and Marian and did she have any siblings? Thanks in advance
Dear Alan, Thanks for your email, those websites were great finally I am in the right direction. Thanks again Leanne Dudley Alan Thom <shiral@efni.com> wrote: Haddington is in the County of East Lothian not Midlothian. It is a little like looking in Adelaide for someone who loved in Brisbane. As you give no Christian names or dates I would suggest the following sites: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/ This site allows you to search a specific parish (e.g., Haddington) for the Birth/Christening ("C") or the Marriage ("M") of someone with a specific surname. Searches are carried out with year ranges according to the Batch Number. For example the is an Isabella MacAdam married in Haddington in the period from 1820-1865. The record will give the Spouse's name and the date of the wedding. Follow the URL above. Click on Scotland and on the next screen select, East Lothian. On the next screen Select "H" or scroll down until you find Haddington. You will find a series of Batch Numbers for Christenings and Marriages. Each batch corresponds to a year range. Select the one you want and one the next screen type in the name MacAdam and start your search. This site has undergone sone changes lately and I find that it sometimes returns all the persons with the search name in Scotland on the first try. Go back to the Batch Number page and try again. http://www.familysearch.org/ This site covers the same material as the one above but is organized differently. It is searchable in a number of ways and it is possible to leave sections blank. Go to the URL and select SEARCH. On the next screen select INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX. On the next screen enter your information a start a search. In tracing ancestors in Scotland keep in mind that names often followed a naming pattern. That might allow you to trace back further. You can also ask on the East Lothian site for a Census look-ups as well for the period from 1851 - 1881. Hope this helps you get started. We figured that the landlord or rellies at the one address gave his details and so did his kin at the other address. > I am fairly sure I have found two entries for the same person, Robert Rough aged > 15 and born in England, at two family addresses in the 1841 Edinburgh census. Not common but it did happen. Note that in 1841 the census makes NO ref to relationships. Those two boys with same name may have been cousins, or one was an unrelated boarder. Feel sorry for me. My ggg grandparents who married 1798 named three sons as Duncan Cameron. We have baptism dates but no birth dates. Cheers, ALISTAIR M. Hi Lorna, I notice you have details of certificates for Andrew MURRAY & Agnes GOODALL (1864 Temple and 1866 Borthwick), do you have any connection to this couple? They were my 4x's great grandparents. I would be happy to share information. Regards Audrey
Has anyone else had the experience of one person mentioned twice (at different addresses) in the same census? I am fairly sure I have found two entries for the same person, Robert Rough aged 15 and born in England, at two family addresses in the 1841 Edinburgh census. He is recorded with his grandmother at "south back of Canongate" and also with his uncle at 10 Catherine St. I have no reason to believe there were two boys both named Robert the same age in that family. Is this double entry at all common? Cheers Brian Rough ------------------------------------------- Get your free email at ourbrisbane.com now

Hi: Does anyone know how I can get information on Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh? I have a few ancestors buried there and would like to get the burial information. Many Thanks. Ken in USA
Hello Lorna, May I please have details of the following death? Thank you. -- Alice Mary FORSYTH widow of James FORSYTH dau John CHALMERS & Christina MATHESON
On 14 Sept 1832, Cunningham Sheppard (a "traveling equipment manufacturer") married Janet Law. On 14 April 1833, Cunningham Sheppard and Janet Law had a son born---also named Cunningham. Both records are located in the St. Cuthberts Parish OPRs. These are the only records I've been able to locate concerning the husband/father. The mother married Alexander Meek in 1839 and James McDonald in 1872 before she died in 1882. Most of her life was spent in the Edinburgh area and she lived on Parish relief per the 1851 census. The first husband seems to have disappeared and I'm wondering if there is some way to determine if he left the country as a seaman, etc. Also, the "Camillus" departed Greenock and arrived in NY on 8 May 1834. Included on the passenger list were Janet Shephard (22) and Cunningham Shephard (1). There were no other known family members/friends on this passenger list. Is there any way to learn more about the woman and child that made this voyage? If this is the same woman that married Alexander Meek, she and her child returned to Scotland prior to 1839. Is there any way to learn when a return voyage might have been made? Thanks for any advice! Sandy Ellis
it isnt uncommon - they are entered at the place they live, even though they were away visiting on census night. you are actually only supposed to enter the people who slept in your house on census night, not the people who live there - but people didnt always get it right, especially early on in censuses LIz >From: jabiru@ourbrisbane.com >Reply-To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com >To: MIDLOTHIAN-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [MLN] Census double-up >Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 11:21:14 +1000 > >Has anyone else had the experience of one person mentioned twice (at >different >addresses) in the same census? >I am fairly sure I have found two entries for the same person, Robert Rough >aged >15 and born in England, at two family addresses in the 1841 Edinburgh >census.
