    1. [MIDLOTHIAN] 57,000+ Scottish BDM records avaliable for free
    2. J D v Dods
    3. Hi everyone, with others mentioning the sharing of certs I thought I might mention the Scottish BMD exchange, this is a site in which people like you & me can enter from details of Scotland People Images or transcripts/photocopies from OPR films so that we can share with others, the maintained by the hard working Sue Lund, who has been running it for many many years. To date there are is just shy of 58,000. The site is similar to other nationial BDM shareing sites arround the world, and IMHO the best set out. So.... If you if you haven't been before visit: http://www.sctbdm.com If you haven't been for awhile go back & check it and if like me you have some(more) certs to add to push the record counter up please take time to do so. A few points, Sue like all other BMD exchange site owners is a volunteer, so it may take some time for your record to appear after you have sent to her, so be paitent and if you see a record that looks like one of yours contact the person who provided it not Sue. 3. Hi Bob. Thanks very much for you time and effort. I found the children on the IGI on the net and have ordered the film number I got there (C116882) , and although I go to the FHC quite often am not familiar with BIVRI data. I was briefly in Edinburgh and found confirmation of this line at New Reg, House. Now the work begins. I was hoping to smoke out some live descendants. I have found message boards great for that in the past. Cheers Janet

    3. Pre 1855, check the family history societies for MI transcriptions. Also check the http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/MLN/index.html and other genuki extensions as you may luck out and find links through local kirks. And example, one I found in the East Lothian's identified one of my fourth great grandparents in a Kirk yard I had walked and missed, their crumbling stone. Beyond that, in my years living in the UK I walked, literally, more Kirk yards than I ever dreamed of looking for and transcribing family names. What has already been said is true, that a family had to have some money before they could or would spare the money for a memorial. BUT, each of the eight that I have found have not only provided additional information and documentation, but a very special opportunity to consider my family stood in the same spot on sad day up to 200 years ago... My earliest find is 1792, so they are out there.... Good luck John and I hope you can get up and walk some Kirk yards. The figure I recall is less than 1% of Scots who died in the first half of the 19th Cenutury have any record of thier death. If your ancestors rich and could afford it, a monumental inscription might have survived. The Scottish Genealogical Society has several booklets MI transcriptions for sale, there are also some transcriptions online, just google "monumental inscriptions , Scotland". The some Church of Scotland records do survive, this is very patchy, some parishing having nothing, some just a few blocks of years, most of these records are in the form of accounts, usually payments for Mort Cloth hire but I have accounts for, ringing of the bell, hurse hire and gavestones, the account book entries are often as one would expect in the name of the person paying the money rather than deceased, by sometimes you get lucky. The Church of Scotland records have all been filmed by the LDS, but are largely unindexed. At some point they will be all indexed on the Scotlands People site. This aside it is still worth looking but be prepared to find nothing or dance arround the room if you find one. I dream of walking through Kirkyards & the streets of my ancestors. I am a solo dad, so living that dream will wait till my kids are grown. But thanks to the generiousity of many Scots ( & the odd Kiwi whose made the trip arround the world to visit the places of thier ancestors) I have photos of MI's of my own in Haddington, on a farm in Aberlady and Linlithgow. Even the inside of the home of my 4 great-parents. cheers John --- "Preacher, Hugh J." <[email protected]> wrote: > Pre 1855, check the family history societies for MI > transcriptions. > > Also check the > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/MLN/index.html and > other genuki extensions as you may luck out and find > links through local > kirks. > > And example, one I found in the East Lothian's > identified one of my > fourth great grandparents in a Kirk yard I had > walked and missed, their > crumbling stone. > > Beyond that, in my years living in the UK I walked, > literally, more Kirk > yards than I ever dreamed of looking for and > transcribing family names. > > What has already been said is true, that a family > had to have some money > before they could or would spare the money for a > memorial. 2. Susan Hembury-Kellow
    3. Hi Marilyn, Not as far as I know, but I'm afraid I know very little about the early URQUHARTS. Briefly, I have the following: William URQUHART mar. Mary ROBERTSON, circa 1762, perhaps at Dalkeith? Of their five children (William, John, Anne, Alexander and Thomas), I only know of one that married: Alexander URQUHART, born 1770, Dalkeith, married Margaret KERR, 1788, South Leith. They had eight children, only three of whom married as far as I know: 1. Margaret URQUHART, born 1793, Dundee, Angus. Married John MCGREGOR in 1810, Dundee. 2. Thomas URQUHART, born 1798, Dundee, Angus. Married Margaret Barnes SMALLSHAW, 1830, Everton, Lancashire. Had two daughters, Jane and Margaret, but don't know if they married. 3. Robertson URQUHART, born 1800, Dundee, Angus. Married Margaret JACK, 1823, Dundee, Angus. Had four children, three of whom later married: a. James URQUHART, born 1825, Dundee. Married Elizabeth Scott BLACK, 1849, Monifieth, Angus and moved to Liverpool where he ran a thriving Cabinet Making business employing 50 men in 1881. One of his daughters, Elizabeth Pryde URQUHART, married Charles ALDER, a Dentist, in 1874. b. Elizabeth URQUHART, born 1827, Dundee. In 1857 she married John NICOL, a teacher of Practical Pharmacy, and a lecturer in chemistry at Edinburgh. c. Patrick Whyte URQUHART, born 1829, Dundee. A Master Mariner, he married Elizabeth MCNAY at Birkenhead, Lancs. in 1874. They had two daughters - haven't yet found marriages for either. There may be other marriages etc., but the above is all the stuff I have that's immediately URQUHART related. If anyone would like more detail, I shall be happy to oblige. Best wishes, Sue -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Marilyn Sent: 25 September 2007 20:34 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] URQUHART family of Dalkeith and South Leith Susan: Does your Urquhart family have any Cumming/Comyn families tied in?
