His ancestors were also "Masons", but I have found them described also as contractors etc. The details I know are: JOSEPH ARTHUR b. Edinburgh 17 Feb 1880 I have found the following Census Info: 1871 Residence 1 South Grays Close Edinburgh 1881? Residence 23 Fox Street Leith South (all family accounted for) 1891 No trace of JOSEPH senior or CATHERINE SAMUEL Age 16 lodging with YOUNG family at Monroes Buildings, Stobhill, Midlothian and employed as a coal miner. Shown on Census as being born in Glasgow? (prob clerical error) JOSEPH junior Age 14 lodging with ROBERTSON family at Eastons Land, Stobhill Midlothian and employed as a colliery labourer. Shown on Census as being born in Glasgow? (prob clerical error) JOHN & THOMAS lodging with BUCHAN family at Hillhead, Newbattle, Midlothian?and described as scholars. 1901 JOSEPH senior turns up in City Workhouse, Parliamentary Road, Glasgow, where he dies on 24 May 1901. At this time he is described as a Bricklayer. I know that SAMUEL, JOSEPH junior & THOMAS survived the First World War, but have never found any trace of CATHERINE after 1881 or?JOHN after 1891. Has anyone every seen any info on my family, or can help me with the period from 1881 to 1891. I suspect that CATHERINE died after 1881 Census & family split up with boys being taken in by friends. As a "Mason" seems to have devolved into a "Bricklayer", I presume the family were in the Stobhill area where JOSEPH senior may have had work when the coal mines were being developed. Any help will be most appreciated. I have spent hours searching on Scotlands People, Family Search etc just to find myself back where I started. With the HARE name in many emails just now, I am searching for any information on Susannah HARE, my 3xg-grandmother who married a David BROWN circa 1790. My gg grandmother was Catharine Nisbet b.1834 in Leith Midlothian and married to John Mackay (b.1827 in Montrose Forfarshire) They were married 15th May 1853 in ST Cuthberts Parish Edinburgh and had nine children. Found the reference to the marriage of James NISBET, brassfounder. St. Cuthberts OPR. Elizabeth MASON, only daughter of late Robert Mason, weaver, E. Leith. Married 13 November 1853. !) it says only daughter which sort of kills the idea that she was the sister of James' first wife Catherine Mason. Still could be a cousin? So Elizabeth Mason would be correct for his second wife (since your Catherine also married in 1853). So who was his first wife? So it would appear that the first wife of James, the brassfounder, was Catherine. I tried the IGI for the births of the children. Found Andrew, b. 30 Nov 1828 in South Leith to James Nisbet and Catherine MAVOR. I tried for any other children born to a couple by this name, but only Andrew came up. I then checked the IGI for any marriages of a James Nisbet to a Catherine in Midlothian or East Lothian and found only two, both in October 1827 in Leith. A James married a Catherine MASON in Oct. 1827 in South Leith, and a James married a Catherine GRAME 1 Oct 1827 in North Leith. A search for children to either of these marriages brought up only a son, David, in 1828 to the Grame marriage. So my best guess is that your Catherine Nisbet was b. ca 1833 to James Nisbet, brassfounder, and his first wife Catherine MASON. And since James, Catherine, and Elizabeth were all born outside of Midlothian, I am willing to bet that Catherine and Elizabeth could have been sisters or cousins. Unfortunately the first Catherine must have died before 1855 civil registration, so there will be no nice death record with her parents' names on it. Sigh. It might be possible to get Elizabeth Mason Nisbet's death certificate just to see who her parents are--but it wouldn't be proof as to whether or not she was first Catherine's sister. Elizabeth Mason Nisbet, according to the index to estates (LDS film #0990448) died 21 April 1883 in Edinburgh, leaving an estate of 85 pounds. If you did get her death registration from Scotlandspeople you could at least check out if her parents had a child named Catherine. You could also download the marriage of Ann Nisbet to Adam Turnbull in 1868, to confirm that her parents (and thus your Catherine's) were indeed James Nisbet and Catherine MASON. Good luck! Boy is it nice see see a discussion about the Nisbet line (and spelled my way). You subscribe to these lists and usually you only see your surnames when you post messages yourself. Anyway, I too am researching the Nisbet family line and mine were located in Edinburgh. The current top of my tree is John Nisbet, born about 1800 and was a Cabinetmaker. His sons continued to be Cabinetmakers and later French Polishers. John married Isabella Nicol in 1820 (their banns were read May 25 1820) who was born April 10 1800 in Livingston. John died January 31 1841 in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh and Isabella died February 12 1865 in Edinburgh. Their children were John, James, William (died young), Martha, William, Janet, Isabella, Ann, Helen and Alexander. All were born in Edinburgh. The family stay in the Edinburgh area, a few wandered to Glasgow, one (Ann) ended up in Australia and began an large family line there and a couple (including my great grandfather) found their way to Ontario Canada.
