Hello James, The name Peter Duncan doesn't sound familiar, and I'm not sure about Anne McNeil, but I did look into Peter Duncan in Utah, and found and copied a death certificate for him and for a son James McNeil Duncan. If you don't already have them, and need a copy, just let me know, and I'll send it your way. I'm new at researching my Duncan/McNeil/Reid clan in Scotland, so I'm not familiar with to many names, but I will keep Peter Duncan and Anne McNeil on my list, just incase I do make a connection. Thank you for asking. Hi >From time to time, I have come across what appears to be a surname used as a forename. In my line I have a female named Cunninghame Smith. Nowadays I've noticed young female children named Kennedy or MacKenzie and so on. Does anyone know the origin of the forename, Pringle for a female? I thought it was a surname further back in my family, but in quite a few emails lately, it seems to be a first name in other families too. Just wondering. Jean
If you search the IGI with Pringle as a forename, no surname, British Isles, and use exact spelling, you get 193 hits, of which about 180 are Scottish records. FreeBMD (England & Wales only) has just over 80 records presently . . . . Don
"I have from ScotlandsPeople, the Old Parish Register record (693/0080 0379) of my gg Grandfather, John GRAY's 1828 marriage in the Parish of Liberton to Pringle SANDERSON, which states (as far as I can read the script) - "That John Gray Labourer Inch Gate and Pringle Sanderson residing at Bridgend, both of this Parish..." Alan, I do not know about Inch Gate but Pringle Sanderson's parents, Thomas Sanderson and Margaret Johnston were my husband's (and yours) ggg Grandparents. John Gray died 30 Jan 1894, East Lodge, Duddingston Policy. Pringle died 11 February 1879 at the same address. I have more information on their family which I would prefer to send off list. Helen.
Alan, I am not a resident of Edinburgh but used to know it well, and I have maps ! Inch House appears to be still standing on the SE side of the city. Presumably the Gatehouse was where your ancestor lived. It would be on the A68 and on the other side of the road is Bridgend Farm ( as was ) which is still on the modern maps. Don't know where you are, but if you have maps it is just N of the new Royal Infirmary at Little France. If you don't have the maps. if you contact me I will scan to you. Jean: Not only was I wondering about the name, I also wondered if it was a nickname as the scots were prone to using them. Has anyone any idea what or where Inch Gate was? (And where would Bridgend be?) With John and GRAY being rather common names in this area, John is my brick wall, and I have not found any clue to his parents as yet. IS there a local person who knows of a Meadowbank Burial Ground. I have found three references to Meadowbank.... Tranent, Edinburgh, and near Livingston or Kirknewton. Can anyone shed any light on this? Probably existed around 1822 at least. Margaret
