    2. fionnghal nicphadraig
    3. hi Margaret, No Alice AIRD coming up unfortunately, under any spelling, so she died, married or moved out of Scotland. You don't state where these children of the former marriage were born. There are 4 WILLIAM NIVENs & 1 THOMAS in the Lowland Scottish 1881 born within 3 years of your sons' dobs. [Because the age given on a census can be misleading you can't assume that the one closest in age is yours.] The 4 WILLIAMs are recorded as having been born in Alexandria [Dunbartonshire], Ireland, Lochmaben [Dunfermline] and Edinburgh respectively. None were born in LKS. I have only found 1 THOMAS NIVEN and he's listed as being born b.c.1849 Whitburn [West Lothian] do you recognise any of these? if any, or all, are of interest, let me know and i'll send them. Margaret, and all those reading this, when posting an enquiry, it's a great idea to list all persons being sought, alongside all reasonable known data, as you did listing the kids of the previous marriage [1]year + age, [2]place of birth or origin - of every known member of the family. [3] relationship to Head [4] Occupation can be a great guide too. It makes all the difference to the person seeking them and who is likely to be unfamiliar with the family particularly if it turns out to be a fairly common name. :-) happy hunting le durachd fionnghal --- Margaret Jenkin <[email protected]> wrote: I have children named > Allice, Matilda & Thomas AIRD although Matilda was > married to a Thomas > NIVEN earlier and had children Agnes b 1847,William > b 1848 & Thomas b 1851 to that relationship. ___________________________________________________________ Want ideas for reducing your carbon footprint? 3. found you AIRE parents, living in the household of son Andrew, wife and young family _ his brother, Thomas. See below. I'll have a look and see if Alice is around, though she may be married. re step-kids' surnames, I have instances of kids of previous marriages being hidden under the surname of the new marriage, but not always. you'd be best to take the broader view and follow up both names. sometimes they took the stepfather's name while in the family household but revert to their own when they leave home or marry. i have a case of that in my own family and i was a long time finding them as i'd never known of the subsequent marriage. the family had simply fallen off the planet! be back shortly fionnghal Dwelling: Gibsons Land Census Place: Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203616 GRO Ref Vol.625-1 EnumDist 7 Pg.23 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Andrew AIRD M 38 M Calderbank, Lanark [LKS] Rel: Head Occ: Steel Shingler Jemima AIRD M 32 F Galston, Ayr Rel: Wife David AIRD 4 M Bellshill, LKS Rel: Son Andrew AIRD 2 M Bellshill, LKS Rel: Son James H. 3. Hi Sue, Thank you so much for all your help and advice and all that interesting info. Incidentally one of the other men jailed with Alexander WATSON was Henry BELL. Perhaps this name could help. We will do some investigating about non conformists as well. As you say unfortunately his name would be WATSON. Christine and Peter in NZ -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Susan Hembury-Kellow Sent: Monday, October 15, 2007 11:55 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Some spare OPR births/baptisms, South Leith,1771/1772 Hi Christine and Peter, There is a possibility that you'll need to search through non conformist records to find Alexander's baptism details (bearing in mind that he was a Primitive Methodist Lay Preacher). I'm not 100% sure about the location of these, but I'm fairly sure that non conformist records aren't held by the GROS (General Register Office for Scotland); instead, I think they may be at the NAS (National Archives of Scotland) see http://www.nas.gov.uk/ (but see below). I think I may have found out why Alexander's eldest daughter was called Rebecca Bell WATSON - in 1841, Alexander and family were at the same address as (but different household to) a Rebecca BELL at Whitley, Tynemouth, Northumberland: 1841 census Whitley, Tynemouth, Northumberland James BELL, 20, Coal Cutter, Y George BELL, 15, Coal Cutter, Y James BELL, 14, Coal Cutter, Y Jane BELL, 9, Y Rebecca BELL, 30, Independent, Y *** Alexander WATSON, 30, Coal Cutter, S(cotland) Jane WATSON, 35, Independent, Y John WATSON, 6, Y I just had a thought, and had a look in the British Vital Records Index v2. and found the following baptism: WATSON, Alexander Birth Date: 5 Jun 1809 Christening Date: 6 Jul 1809, South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland Father: Alexander WATSON Mother: Janet BURNS I couldn't see a brother John WATSON, but did find two sisters, Janet and Mary: WATSON, Janet Birth Date: 21 Feb 1805 Christening Date: 28 Feb 1805, South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland Father: Alexander WATSON Mother: Janet BURNS WATSON, Mary Birth Date: 7 Oct 1812 Christening Date: 15 Oct 1812, South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland Father: Alexander WATSON Mother: Janet BURN I should point out though that there were lots of WATSONs baptised in South Leith alone, so this may not be your Alexander. (Fingers crossed though!). 3. Hi Christine and Peter, There is a possibility that you'll need to search through non conformist records to find Alexander's baptism details (bearing in mind that he was a Primitive Methodist Lay Preacher). He must have left Scotland as a youngster as he landed up marrying Jane HINDSON from Long Benton in Bishopwearmouth Co. Durham in 1834.They called their eldest daughter Rebecca Bell WATSON so is that a clue. He worked in the Coal Mines of Northumberland, being a Primitive Methodist Lay Preacher he was jailed in Morpeth Prison for a couple of months on the Treadmill as an example when an "Illegal" Strike took place in 1859. Torture. He must have been a tough nut. I believe he had a brother John WATSON who was a little older. Christine and Peter in NZ

    3. Hi Listers, It looks as if my SCT ancestry goes back to:- William SANDERSON = Marion HENDERSON at Currie 1781 Their son William SANDERSON bn 1785 = Ann BALLANTINE at St Andrews Edinburgh, 1805. Issue. David bn 1808 Alexander bn 1809 Elizabeth Katherine SANDERSON Family settled at Penicuik - papermakers. David seems to have worked for a paper / timber firm and settled in S WLS. He travelled all over N Europe, (mge in Finland) and Russia. Alexander joined the City of LND Police. He married Jessie ROBERTSON in the City. Jessie was the d/o William, a Farmer, from SCT, somewhere. Thanks, Alan Merryweather. ----- Original Message ----- From: Susan Hembury-Kellow To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, October 13, 2007 5:15 PM Subject: Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Some spare OPR births/baptisms, South Leith,1771/1772 Hi Jean, The info was merely some spare data from my own researches. When you download a page from the OPRs it will invariably contain not just the record you wanted, but a few other records as well. I thought it would be a good idea to transcribe these rather just leaving them to moulder in my computer files, and actually began transcribing my OPRs for the Angus list quite some while back (most of my ancestors were from Angus and Perthshire). However, I also have ancestors from Midlothian, the main names being URQUHART, ROBERTSON and KERR (from Dalkeith and South Leith).
