    2. Doreen Baxter
    3. My great grandfather James Sinclair was widowed in 1870 and he remarried in 1873 to Helen Reid in Edinburgh. According to their daughter Jane's marriage certificate, Helen was still alive in 1901. Her birth year was approx. 1838 so she would be about 63 then. Her father was Daniel Reid of Edinburgh. I have searched for Helen's death and so far have been totally unsuccessful. Is there anyone on the list from Daniel Reid's family please? Doreen Sinclair Baxter

    2. Budd, number 88 is on the west side of Candlemaker Row which means it is in New Greyfriars Parish; the east side of Candlemaker Row is in Old Greyfriars Parish.? In both cases they will come under the Edinburgh City Parish as far as pre 1855 Register of Births Deaths and marriages are concerned (sometimes in those registers these two?parish name are shortened to 'OGP' or NGP') A good place to look for detailed maps is the National Library of Scotland Digital maps collection. http://www.nls.uk/maps/index.html I've got a very small map on my own website but not detailed enough to see individual streets. http://www.hoodfamily.info/misc/miscedinmaplarge.html Albert ________________________________________________________________________ AOL's new homepage has launched. 3. Budd I would have thought that Candlemaker Row would be in the parish of St Giles or failing that St Cuthbert. I see that you are interested in No. 88 - what is you connection to it? My great grandfather's business was at No. 90, however, that was some 40 years after the date you are interested in. Regards David

    3. Hi Eleanor, I see a George SKINNER aged 8 in a poorhouse in Falkirk. in 1871. The record (and I am only looking at the index on Ancestry.com) says he was born in Dalkeith, Perthshire. Is this a possibility? Was his brother alive at that time? Have you found either of his parents? .Have you found him in 1891? 3. I am searching for George Skinner on the 1871 census. He was born in Dalkeith September 1861 so would be nine years old. Only have a birth certificate then in 1881 census I find him in Newcraighall giving the wrong age and birthplace. His parents were not married so possible that not both parents would show on census. He also had a younger brother James born Glasgow October 1863 but I have never been able to find anything for him but a birth certificate. Parents of George & James Skinner are Alexander Skinner a shoemaker and Christina or Christian Taylor born Newbattle or Falkirk. I would be glad of any help or suggestions as I am at a complete dead end.

    3. Hello List I am new to Midlothian research, being in "middle England". Can anyone please offer me any further sightings of the following chap who dangles in my extended tree. This is my note from 1881 Scottish transcript of census: 1881 There is an England-born, 41 year old Andrew KURTZ in St George's Hospital, Midlothian - inmate. 685/1 Registration district: St George Civil Parish: St George County: Midlothian ED: 4 Page: 18 Household schedule number: 78a. This fits "my" Andrew on age, and I can't find him anywhere else. I wonder what brought him to Midlothian: the family were manufacturing chemists and tar distillers in S Lancashire & N Cheshire. Did he come north for the shale-oil industry? Or was he "sent away" to an institution? Any sightings or information about Andrew, or any other KURTZ, in the area would be greatly appreciated. Andrew's generation are mostly born Liverpool, some in Manchester area. Jacqui

If a wife had been deserted by a husband, she might sometimes claim to be married and other times to be widowed. If the son claims his father was deceased when he married, it may or may not be true - the father may simply have disappeared, possibly back to Ireland, and might still be living. I have one family where I searched in vain for the wife's death, since the husband was listed as a widower at his death, until I found her death some thirteen years later. In the 1881 census he was listed as widowed and she was listed as married, but living on her own several counties away Catherine
