    1. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] LEWIS, Jewish Tailor, Edinburgh
    2. Death certs are unreliable as it depends who supplied the information - eg my husband would totally fail telling any official where any of us were born or when. He isnt even too sure about himself. I have a death cert for one ancestor which says she was born cork, Ireland. but her wedding cert, says she was born in London. This is backed up by the 1841 census. I fancy she spoke a lot in her old age of her family being from Cork, her mother perhaps, and that is how her friend supplied the information for the death cert. kind regards Marg Port Stephens, NSW, Australia One name study - S.K.E.A.D, S.K.E.D TOMAREE FAMILY HISTORY - (Port Stephens NSW) http://www.tomareefamilyhistory.com/index.html Tone's art web site http://www.tonesart.net/ ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 08, 2008 8:19 PM Subject: [MIDLOTHIAN] LEWIS, Jewish Tailor, Edinburgh > > Hi, > > I submitted this yesterday but it seems to have disappeared into the > ether. > Appologies if it is now a duplicate. > > I am new to this list and am trying to find answers to big family puzzle. > > My uncle by marriage Bernard LEWIS was born in March 1903 in Edinburgh, > according to his death certificate in 1978. 3. Ancestry's transcribers can be a bit creative sometimes; I agree it looks like "Fanny" - it's not even like the way that enumerator writes his Rs. If the dob wasn't quite accurate then FreeBMD has a couple of possibilities for Bernard's birth, given that the district of West Ham is probably within earshot of the Bow bells! Best wishes, Sheena Ireland -----Original Message----- From: "Margaret Woodford" <[email protected]> Sorry, should have mentioned in case I'm wrong. 3. Another Census Entry from 1891. No mention of England after Holland, unlike 1901where Eng. was added in different (faint) handwriting. Since his niece's place of birth was given as Holland and she had a foreign name, I tend to think that he was in fact born in that country, and possibly changed his surname, perhaps even to that of his wife. I agree. To me, it most certainly looks like Fanny on the original. I could understand more if the F had been transcribed a T, but not as R. Toni

    1. [MIDLOTHIAN] LEWIS, Jewish Tailor, Edinburgh
    2. Hi, I submitted this yesterday but it seems to have disappeared into the ether. Appologies if it is now a duplicate. I am new to this list and am trying to find answers to big family puzzle. My uncle by marriage Bernard LEWIS was born in March 1903 in Edinburgh, according to his death certificate in 1978. On his marriage certificate he gives his father's details as Louis LEWIS, a Master tailor. The thing is all his life he said he had been born in London, considered himself a cockney and said that he had been born within the sound of Bow Bells. He certainly sounded like a cockney! He was Jewish, kept Kosher food all his life and always said he had no other family. My own mother (his sister-in law ) registered his death and she had never said that he was from Edinbugh. I am trying to find his birth. I have looked on Scotland's People and have not found anything which could be a possible birth record, I have also searched for him under the name of Bernard LEVY as I know that a lot of Jews changed their names around that time. I should say that I can't find details of him in London either and so far my best hope is the impending 1911 census release next yaar and look for him there. Does anyone have any other ideas as to where I should search, not having done any searching in Scotland before I am new to this area. Thank you Jas in Devon

    1. Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] NAS online
    2. Catherine Fitchett
    3. As far as them telling you how many pages, the documents usually have the pages numbered so it is no problem. They did tell me how many pages the record was and the charge per page plus total charge. If it is a bound volume there are restrictions as to copy methods for conservation reasons, which was what made the record I wanted very expensive. I think it involved filming and then printing - yes, an alternative would be a digitised copy on CD to save postage, but I don't think it reduces copy costs much. They wouldn't however list contents or assess which pages might be most useful - you would have to pay a researcher for that. The NAS staff will however supply copies of identified documents on request. I have also requested from them post-1901 wills by supplying details of the name and date of death. I didn't have to hire a researcher, just paid the NAS direct by credit card and they mailed it to me. It is not cheap, but nor is hiring a researcher at £18 an hour or so. As to the difficulties with the catalogue, I haven't had any, although I think there is currently a note on the website saying they have had issues with it. Perhaps as it gets more popular it is getting overloaded. Good to hear they are getting an enhanced search facility Catherine On 7/02/2008, at 12:46 PM, [email protected] wrote: > et="US-ASCII" > > Janet, > > I've also had trouble getting details. Hi Janet, You didn't mention the 1871 census, so I wondered if you had the following? Looks as though the first may be your elder Alexander KETCHIN. Hope it does help you. I couldn't find an obvious Alexander with a wife Mary (Ann) in 1891. Nor could I find a Roberts OWENS in 1871. 3. Hi Janet I've got a copy of the 1881 Census on CD. It says Alexander was Married and that the One-year old child was born in Edinburgh. It can be very hard to read some of the original writing on Census records. The mistake in Alexander's age and Owens/Ovens names may be due to illegibilty or the census taker made a mistake. Here is a copy of the details.
