Hi Liz, Now I am really confused!!!! If Cecilia Dempster is the wife of grandson Robert, then Robert must be a Dempster, son of one of William's daughter's who married a Dempster????? If this is the case, which daughter?? I have a list of some of William & Jean's children and who they married compliments of Jean, and I don't see a Dempster in them. Help!!!!! gretchen **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Go to AOL Music. (http://music.aol.com/grammys?NCID=aolcmp00300000002565)
Gretchen, a kinship report for William on my software shows that: Your Alexander Baptie is the son-in-law of William and that Cecilia Dempster, my great aunt is the wife of the grandson, Robert. I don't know how that makes me related to everyone but distantly we are. My tree software will do a relationship report, but not as far back, only direct relationships. I wish it would tell me something like 1st cousin 18 times removed or something like that.... ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 9:40 PM Subject: Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] Elizabeth Laing > Hi Marie, > > If I am reading your info correctly, your James LAING is a descendent of > David LAING. Hi Liz; I think that all of this 'Laing Clan' must say Thank You! for your offer of working on our tree branches. Yes, we do have a holiday on Monday. Marie in Alberta
Hi Marie, If I am reading your info correctly, your James LAING is a descendent of David LAING. David is the brother of Elizabeth LAING whose second marriage was to Alexander BAPTIE who was my great-great grandfather, making Elizabeth my great-great grandmother. I don't know what that makes you to me, but it sure does make us related somehow.........grin!!!! gretchen Michigan **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Thanks Jean, That gave me lots more information to play with. It is strange to me that David Laing married Elizabeth Stevenson. I have (at a later date) an Elizabeth Stevenson with a sister Jean who married into my Alexander Baptie family (Elizabeth Laing's second husband). I have always wondered how the two met as he was from the Newton area and she was from Berwickshire. Possibility of family connection there.!! gretchen **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Go to AOL Music. Bless you Liz!!! I was wondering how we were going to figure out how we were all related. It seems for sure that we are. I would love to know who is who and how we are related. Hello Marie. Seems to me that you are related. I think we need to put all of this into a tree, and do a relationship report. That would tell us what relationship to each other we all are. I think I will work on that over the weekend. I have a holiday on Monday, the new Canadian "Family Day" and apparently my husband doesn't, and my daughter will probably have things to do with friends, so I will have time on Monday to do things. Will contact everyone when I have done this. I also have a connection to the Laing line. However, mine seems to a generation later and don't know exactly where they fit in. James Laing (c1847) married Barbara BRAND (1851-1920). Children: Margaret (b1875) William (b1878) Agnes (1880) married Edward DANKS (b1879) James (b1883) It is through Agnes that my connection is made. Hello Liz, Bob and Gretchen Yes, we're all connected to the same family. I was at the GROS in Edinburgh last year and have the earliest as- William LAING married Elizabeth FINLAY 1777 irregularly in Edinburgh and recorded Inveresk p. Children, all born Inveresk p. were David 1778, Jean 1781, William 1783, Janet 1785, William 1788. I have exact birth dates, baptism dates and witnesses. There may have been a child named Pringle, as there is a death of a Pringle LAING in 1821 in Inveresk, (aged 32yrs) with father William LAING. William b 1788 married Jean / Jane ADAMSON 1807 Newton p. Gretchen, your Elizabeth LAING first married Robert ARCHIBALD. Her sister Christian LAING married James ARCHIBALD, who were my gg grandparents. Two sisters married two brothers. Liz, it is wet with wild storms in Sydney, Australia but very humid and hot when the sun shines. Thanks a lot for all that info. I also found out on the IGI that William and Jane/Jean were married 18 Jan, 1807 in Newton. gretchen **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Go to AOL Music. (http://music.aol.com/grammys?NCID=aolcmp00300000002565)
Again, amazed at the action this name has created! I have done some more checking and according to familysearch.org, in the IGI, William and Jane had 11 children. The following are records of births and christenings, and a death record for David Laing: Each one of these records were submitted by a member of the LDS church, or a record has been extracted, and some indicated they were submitted after 1991. Hi Liz I also have got back as far as William & Jean Adamson. Has anyone got back farther? I am not directly linked to the Laing's I am doing research for my cousin's wife who still lives in Edinburgh. David Laing B 1857 Married Alice Wright are her GGGrandparents. I am also in Southern Ontario and fed up with snow. I haven't spoken to anyone I just started this line at the end of last year. Hello Does anyone have any research that includes the above, as he seems rather elusive! I have 7 May 1804 for christening, Jane Ross as spouse (no marriage record), father of a child called William Ross (or Flockhart) and living in Niddrie Mill in the 1841 census. Are there any descendants out there who can add to this please? Kind regards, Craig A. Ross
