Hello, My Father used to live in Penicuik but migrated with his family to Australia in 1927. I know he drove a hire car and I have one of his old business cards which shows he was based at Elmbank Garage in Edinburgh Road Penicuik. So far I have been unable to pin point exactly where this was. Can anyone cast some light on the subject? Thank you Ralph Jobling Sydney , Australia

Eliz, I hope you do not mind me popping in on this message to ask a question of you. I just happened to notice your family name is Purves and wondered if you were any relation to a Margaret Purvis born about 1795 in Scotland that married an Andrew Hamilton? I have Margaret as the child of Alexander and Isabel Gordon Purvis. Would this happen to be your family? Hi I live in Penicuik and today there is no Elm Bank on the Edinburgh Road. However I did find reference to it on the 1901 census. It is part of Shottstown Penicuik. There is a Miner's Welfare Club at Shottstown now which is on the main road through Penicuik leading to Edinburgh (A701). There is a garage a little further up the road which is towards Eastfield Drive that has now been turned into a Touchless Car Wash. This could be the garage you are looking for, however on speaking to my mother-in-law who was born in Penicuik, Shottstown did not reach as far as that. I hope that the above may be of some use and I hope that you do find out where the garage was. Hi Listers Have checked the VRI & the 1881 British Census & National Index for additional children for the following couple also S. People. Extract OPR – Parish of Edinburgh – County of Midlothian Robert STEWART - shoe maker – St Georges Parish Isabella KEAY – James Parish – daughter of Hugh KEAY – shoe maker – Edin. – 3 Banns proclaimed – no objection. banns read - 06 June 1824. Mathew Mitchell STEWART Born 20 Feb. !839 Christ. 30 Apr. 1839 Does anyone have ideas as where to go to find other possible children for the above couple? It seems so strange that there was only one child born approx. 15 years after the marriage even allowing for early death etc. I have not been able to trace this couple or Hugh Keay prior to the Banns in 1824 or prior to 1839. TIA Beth Beautiful northern NSW Australia
Hi Listers, This is not directly regarding the Laing family, but I am inspired to write by all the difficulty our wayward relatives created for us by inter-marrying within the family. My g-grandfather first married his niece, and Family Tree Maker has no provision for it that I can find. Once a person is listed as a child of someone, they then can't be designated as a spouse of someone else without appearing on the tree as though they were a different person by the same name. They end up being in two different and separate positions on the chart. What to do? Hi all Have cousins marrying. James Laing's daughter Agnes (mother Jane King) married William Archibald, the son of James Archibald and Christian Laing. I'm also related to the King family, but that's another story, as two sisters married two brothers in that family too. Hi to everyone who has been watching or participating in this thread. I would like to say thankyou, for all your information in which has passed thru to us all. To Gretchen, no your family is not the only one, mine who are camerons and campbell are just as confused. I believe that our ancestors did not want us to trace them and all their facts they thought that they had hidden Best Wishes Jane Coffs Harbour NSW Australia -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, 18 February 2008 3:07 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MIDLOTHIAN] LAING Liz, Is every family this messed up or does it just run in our families???? grin..... gretchen **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Ok, we will work on that. So nice to have a 90th in the family. I hope all is well with her and she enjoys many more years. Beth, You stated that you had checked the VRI, if you were checking the VRI on the www.familysearch.org website then you are out of luck It does not include the UK. To see the UK VRI you must visit the local FHC and review the Files on BIVRI2 or order the disk set from the LDS Distribution Office in your area or via the Salt Lake Office in Utah USA. The entry below lists the Parish Registers of Cannonagate Church Edinburgh 1564 - 1872 as the reference, ( Baptisms, 1830-1855. Marriages, 1820-1855. (Preferred film for viewing. Use this before ordering the other filming.)) You could call this film in at your local FHC and go through it, probably handwritten so it will be a slow process. I have no seen the films. I did a quick check for a marriage and other kids but did not see any -- leave the reviewing to your review of the files. Hi Liz; Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have had out of town houseguests who arrived to help my mother celebrate her 90th birthday. It was great. You asked me who James Laing's parents were and I do not have an answer for you. I only have his name through his marriage to Barbara Brand. Marie
Hello all I hope listers aren't bored with this discussion. I have spent a busy weekend looking at the children of William Laing and Jane / Jean Adamson. Have used IGI, then checked all details on censuses and finally had a look on ScotlandsPeople. Here's my conclusions. Child 11. Andrew LAING born in 1830 I can find no trace of an Andrew born or bapt. to William and Jean / Jane. Nothing on censuses or SP. I have taken him out. Child 12. Catherine LAING b 1833. She's not on the 1841 or 1851 censuses BUT on SP Catherine Laing baptised 14 April 1833 in Newton parish with parents William LAING and Jean ADAM. I cannot find any other William Laing and Jean ADAM combination in this time period in this parish. I feel she's "ours". What do you all think? Interestingly, Child 9 John LAING b 1827 doesn't show up on SP. He is definitely with the family in 1841c and 1851c and named as son.
