Judy, thanks so much for this information. I had a look at that listing but unfortunately it isn't her. My Mary was married to John. Thanks too to the other people that suggested I post more information so here goes. Mary Johnson/Johnston was born Mary Conners I think in Ireland about 1828 John Johnson/Johnston was born August 1823. (Don't know where but on the 1861 census the family were at the Aldershot Barracks and he said he was born in Ireland) He enlisted in the 49th Regiment of Foot in November 1841 and at the time said he lived in St. Lukes and his occupation was a tanner. He was stationed in Ireland from 1843 where I presume he met and married Mary. They had children in Ireland, Anne baptised. 1849 in Templemore; Ellen baptised 1853 in Waterford; Bridget (poss not birth name) born St. Lukes 1854/55; and Charles Alexander born 1857 in Barbados. I haven't been able to find others. In 1861 John was discharged from the army on an out pension and said he was going to live in St. Lukes. (Cant find pension details either) In 1873 their daughter Bridget married and on the certificate it said that John was a stoker.(so still alive at the time) In 1886 their daughter Ellen was murdered at Curtis St. Marcus St. West Ham and at the inquest Mary said that she was living at 18 Underwood St. Ellen's children went into Dr. Barnardos in 1888 and my grandmother, one of the children told me that was because their grandmother had died. Not sure if that was true or not as I haven't found her death. I have no record of John or Mary Johnson since their return to England in 1861 and cant find them on any of the census. Most of the information I have is from the 49th regiment of foot archives Any help would be priceless. As you haven't provided any details of her age or place of birth, it's hard for us to know. 1881 - RG11; Piece: 389; Folio: 125; Page: 39 Underwood Street is split between two enumeration districts, 10a and 10b. Hi Marion His pension or discharge records are on findmypast They state he was 1958 private John JOHNSTON a tanner born in the parish of St Lukes in or near the town of London in the County of Middlesex attested in the 49th regt of foot at London 13th Nov 1841, aged 18 years 3 months Your comments suggest you have this record but perhaps have misread it? He was discharged 21st Nov 1862 having served 21 years 9 months I will look at the census next Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 11/07/2014 23:38, middlesex_county_uk@rootsweb.com wrote: > Judy, thanks so much for this information.
