I would like to speak to the following couple to find out exactly where they each came from and who their parents were, especially George Frederick. I have in my husband's family tree George Frederick MICHSHEL who in the 1841 census was noted as born F(oriegn) I believe he may well have been French but can't be sure of this as I have nothing else on him to tell me where he was born. He does not appear as far as I can find in the 1851 census, his wife and some of their children are in Fulham workhouse at that time but where George F. is I am at a loss to say. What makes me think that George was born in France is that he named his eldest son Napoleon! his other son was named George Frederick too. George Frederick died in 1854 aged 65 and was buried in St. Pancras churchyard so he must have been somewhere in the 1851 census but where. His surname on his burial record is misspelt as Mochelle, the surname Michshel is quite often mis-spelt and I believe it may eventually have become Mitchell but again I can't be sure this is the case, it is just a niggling feeling I have. George Frederick Michshel was a modeller in plaster, I imagine he would have made items such as ceiling roses and cornices and other such items that you find in Georgian and Victorian houses. His two sons, Napoleon and George Fred'k junior followed their father into the plastering trade. Whether they were apprenticed to their father or not, which I feel they would have been, I have been unable to discover to date. George's wife was Charlotte VINCENT I believe was born about 1805, she married Geore F. Michshel in 1826 at Bloomsbury St George. Charlotte died in 1853 in Fulham workhouse. I have tracked most of the children of George Frederick Michshel and his wife Charlotte Vincent to their marriages and the later censuses but George Frederick senior has eluded me in the 1851 census which entry would likely have told me where he had originally come from. If anyone else finds him in 1851, or has a connection to the family of Michshel/l I would like to hear from them. Regards Jenny DeAngelis
Hi Jenny, I can“t help you specifically but a few years ago I was tracing a family for a friend. One of her ancestors was also named Napoleon; this was about the same time frame as yours. He married in England but I was lucky enough to discover that he originally came from Canada. Just a thought as your George Frederick may possibly have originated there too, especially considering his more English forenames.
