Hi John Thank you very much for the reply! Here is a brief summary of what I know: Enlisted on 29th June 1843. Joined the Depot of 12th Foot on 6th July 1843 at Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight. Discharged on 15th July 1857 in South Africa, at a base just outside of Grahamstown. I did get some researchers to extract his military record. But there are no clues in there, as to date of birth or place of birth. Married Elizabeth Goss on 24th September 1862 at St Patrick's Church, Grahamstown, age 40. Which makes his birth year about 1822. There is an 1841 census record for a John Pearton whose estimated birth year is about 1821. It shows he was born in Middlesex, and at the time of the census was living in Ealing. It looks like his occupation at the time as a man servant. Of the John Pearton's I could find, to me this looks like the best match. Not sure if this information helps at all! He was born in England in about 1820 or 1821, this I picked up from his marriage details. He joined the 12th Foot Regiment on 29 June 1843, and shipped to South Africa sometime after that. Using his calculated date of birth as a guide, I have a likely suspect on the 1841 England census, but no way of knowing if I am correct. That census record indicates he was born in Middlesex ,England. Any help or suggestions for further research would really be appreciated! year > is about 1821. It shows he was born in Middlesex, and > at the time of the census was living in Ealing. It is rather risky to rely on an 1841 statement of 'born in this county'. So many people didn't see what business it was of anybody else, and just put 'yes' automatically. Servants anyway did not give their own evidence but took what was stated by their employer. It was be rather unusual for an actual male domestic servant to join the Army, unless he was on the run from the law. ]If he was 'MS' on a farm, then it was highly likely he was an incomer' getting the Middlesex hay' which came on 3-4 weeks ahead of other counties, because of lavish applications of 'night soil' It looks like his occupation > at the time as a man servant.
