    1. [MDX] Messenger to the Exchequer career

    3. My gr gr grandfather, Frederick Grant, was baptized at St. John the Evangelist Smith Square in Westminster in February 1840 and was born in December 1839. The church record records his father's occupation as "Messenger in Exchequer Office" and the father's name as John Grant. Today after some google searches I found records for a J. Grant and a John Grant who served as a Messenger for the Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1820 to 1840 when he retired at the age of 62. I've been trying to find more information on John, as it appears likely that he is the father of my Frederick. Frederick joined the Royal Marines around 1855 in Woolwich, Kent. Would anyone have some hints on where to find more information? What would have led to him having obtained the position? Anything during his time as messenger? He may have died shortly after his retirement, and I'm checking into some of those possibilities. any input appreciated. Stephen Pegler
