I guess I was more fortunate than many others, the local LDS was but a short ride away from me and the cost of microfilms was really cheap at $A7 a pop, which later on was dropped to $5 - all added not much difference from paying a six monthly sub to FMP if one were to order a film a week. Over a long period of years I hardly noticed any cost; it was like spending for a cup of coffee. But it was really less cost because one only ordered a film every month or so. So for me and many others, it's not short memory or rose tinted specs. It's good memories and accuracy. Of course it took time, but perhaps life was more leisurely back then so one could fit in more. I considered it was all good value for money, and the weather was usually fine. (Tut tut tut!). Yes, I am subbed to FMP and have been now for well over five years and despite its little hiccups at times it also is enjoyable and very worthwhile. But it is true that there is a danger for people only taking up family history online - I recently checked some connected family trees on Ancestry.com at our State library and found four that had blatant errors that did not comply with original registers, thus whole families were somehow mystically generated like apparitions appearing at a seance. In some cases that may well have happened with microfiche or microfilm, but not to the extent it may occur with online sources. All in all, both systems are/were good, so we should be extremely grateful for these resources. Cheers Graham Melbourne Oz
