Hoping someone can provide me with some guidance. I have been trying to trace the family in the mid 1700's in the Middlesex area. But in FamilySearch, the only option is for London Greater. The area I am wanting to narrow is immediatley north of London Greater. Any suggestions as to what I might select from the list. Thank you for your help, Scott B Canada
Hi Scott The LDS lump various places under "London Greater" Which of course does not exist as such London Greater on familysearch includes Middlesex As far as familysearch is concerned you can't drill down lower than London Greater So whilst I commend you for trying to do it yourself I would suggest you post the details of the person(s) you are seeking and perhaps someone can identify the place they come from with other sources Then you can go further if indeed they are on the IGI which is far from complete What do you consider North of London Greater ? The other option would be to use Hugh Wallis's site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm Again as its derived from the IGI London includes Middlesex but you can select individual Parishes, so you would need to know the Parish but may be useful Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Hoping someone can provide me with some guidance. Hi Scott The LDS have only the vaguest idea of English geography, and they get themselves in a complete muddle where "London" is concerned. The term "London Greater" is pretty meaningless, particularly as in LDS land it only covers the area north of the Thames - everything in metropolitan London south of the river is under "Surrey". But I thought that their "London Greater" did cover the areas of Middlesex which were swallowed up by Greater London in 1965 (after which Middlesex effectively ceased to exist). Which particular area are you looking in? Incidentally, the new Record Search Pilot version of the LDS site does allow Middlesex as a "place", but includes all the areas which were once in that county, including the metropolitan ones.
