I am searching for the marriage of Samuel Ross b c 1815 and Sarah Ann Godfrey bc 1830. She was Samuels first wife and had died by about 1853 - 55, after having two children, Maria in about 1852 St Giles and Samuel Walter in 1853 Clerkenwell I cannot find her death either, but I do have the certificate for his marriage to my G G Grandmother Elizabeth Adelaide Godfrey, Sarah's cousin. In the 1861 census, Samuel aged 46 and Elizabeth aged 30 are living at 3 Bloomsbury St St. Giles Bloomsbury, with Maria aged 9 born London St Andrews Samuel Walter aged 8 born London Clerkenwell, John Eyles ( my G Grandfather) aged 5 born London St Giles Alice aged 1 born London St George the Martyr Samuel was a Fringe and Gaup Weaver. Can anyone explain what a gaup weaver is? I have searched and haven't been able to find any reference for that. What type of weaving was done in London? Samuel Walter and John Eyles Ross came out toMelbourne Australia on the Lucibelle arriving in Dec 1865 They were aged 12 and 10. I haven't been able to find the circumstances for their coming to Australia alone at such an age. It was too early for the Bernardo scheme, but I presume it was through some other benevolent society. I haven't found Samuels death either, but in the 1871 census, Elizabeth is the Head of Household, with sons Arthur J Ross 8, Walter G Ross 5, living at 49 Devonshire St St. George the Martyr. and by the 1881 census she was a widow. She had remarried in 1872 to John Read and he died in 1877. If anyone could give me some clues on this family, or if you may be connected, I would love to hear from you. Kind regards, Nan Bailey Queensland Aust

Hi Anne, This marriage does seem a bit too early Does the transcription give any parents names and ages of the bride & groom? My Samuel Bennett Ross was born in Birmingham about 1815, to *I think* Samuel and Maria Ross. His father was definiltly Samuel Ross gunmaker on his second marriage certificate. Hi Nan, Two things. First, I found the marriage on the Ancestry site between Samuel Robert Ross & Sarah Ann Godfrey April 1834, though Ancestry have mis-transcribed Sarah's surname as Godpey, and put the year as 1835 in the index, the page does read a 1834 though. You will find the marriage in the LMA collection London, England Marriages & banns 1754-1921 on the Ancestry site. If you find the entry you may be able to add an alternative spelling to Sarah's surname, I am not sure on that point. That might help others looking for the same marriage. Secondly. I had a look at the 1861 entry for Samuel Ross and family. His occupation looks to me as though it could be "Fringe & Guip weaver" There seems to be a tiny dot over the middle couple of letters of Guip/Gaup. If it does read as Guip then maybe it is an abbreviation of Guippure. Maybe he wove a type of Guippure, as in Guippure lace. I doubt he was making actual Guippure lace as that would have been an occupation in itself and a very skilled one at that, made over a pattern attached to a lace pillow with the thread wound onto wooden bobbins. I make lace by hand as a hobby having learnt at classes about 30 years ago. One type of lace made in England was a Guippure type made in the Bedfordshire area of England, known in England as Bedfordshire lace. It is generally quite a thick lace, chunkier, compared to the finer point laces made in the Buckinghamshire area close by. Now of course it is all made by machine with hand made lace made only as a hobby, it is very time consuming to make. But maybe in the fringe and trimmings trade around London there was a type of braid that was called Guippure. Perhaps it was the braid that the Fringing was attached to. You know the sort of braid and fringing found on upholstered chairs etc. Some of that type of braid might be described at Guippure because that type of braid can be quite chunky stuff and woven with an open pattern in it. I remember that as a child one of my aunts worked at home making fringing, such as you might get as a trim on a lampshade. She made the tassles and attached them to a ready made braid. That braid would by that time have been made by machine but no doubt the braid was originally hand made. As I understand it there were a lot of silk weavers around the London area and it is likely that Samuel worked with silk threads to make his fringing etc. Hope this helps Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. Samuel Walter must be Elizabeth Adelaide's child, not Charlotte's - the banns for Samuel & Elizabeth were published on 29th August, 5th and 12th September 1852 Anne South Australia Richard Bailey wrote: > I am searching for the marriage of Samuel Ross b c 1815 and Sarah Ann > Godfrey bc 1830.
