Hello Listers, Very good news I have for those who helped me with the GEORGE EARLE family who were winecoopers and wine merchants who had the address 3 Great St. Thomas Apostle. There is a George Earle burial record 29 Sep 1836 in St Thomas Southwark who's abode was St Thomas Apostle Hospital. He died at the age of 36. I think this was the father of THOMAS HOWELL EARLE baptized at St Michael Queenhithe on 25 Mar 1832. Thomas's mother was Eliza. For Ann Chambers who help me a lot and who I steered in the wrong direction by finding a George and Eliza Earle in 1841 who was a winecooper and had a Thomas H. Earle son, I can now say I do not believe that that George was my Thomas Earle's father. You had mentioned George was a labourer on Thomas's marriage certificate. You had found a bankruptcy notice in the Times in 1831 for a George and Charles wine merchants. I figure you are right about George Earl marrying ELIZABETH HOWELL on 24 Feb 1821 St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey even though we have Thomas giving the name ELIZABETH TANNER as his mother's maiden name on his next marriage record here in Canada after his first wife dies. I think Thomas's mother Elizabeth (nee Howell) Earle may have remarried after her husband George's death at age 36 in the above paragraph. Thomas may remember his mother as Tanner only because he was five years of age at the time of George's death and used her second marriage name as her maiden name no! t knowing what it was. I could not find a Thomas Howell Earle and Mary Ann Tullett on the 1851 census but did find who I think is them with a daughter Eliza Rose in 1851 in Bloomington with the surname Howell on Bloomsbury HO107/1507 page 46. We know that Thomas was a policeman from his marriage record 09 Feb1850 Clerkenwell Parish, London, and his father was George. I do not know why he would be going with an alias Howell but for sure he had a daughter ELIZA ROSE EARL who is buried in Canada with her parents as Rose Eliza Howard. Maybe Thomas did not want people to known his wife had been 8 months pregnant when they married. Eliza Rose Earl was born 2 Apr 1850 St Marylebone, Holy Trinity, Marylebone Road, Westminster, Middlesex and her father Thomas was a police office like on his marriage certificate. Marylebone is very close to were I found the Thomas Howell with Mary Ann and the one year old Eliza Rose. I never found Thomas on the 1861 census but did find him and his wife owned a pub in Plumbstead in 1866 before they immigrated to Canada in 1869 on the Medway. I found them on http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18660108-name-135&div=t18660108-174#highlight The Volunteer Public House - 130 Plumstead High Street. On the London Archives I read that 10% of police in London in the 1850's were actually from London. There were about 5000 in total. The new boss didn't want local people being hired and he may have got rid of them hence Thomas's change in occupation. I have Thomas and Mary Ann Earl's daughter Adelaide Louise Earl certified copy of entry to birth 18 December 1864 village of Plumbstead, father Thomas Earl beershop Keeper and mother Mary Ann Tullett. I have Thomas and Mary Ann Earl's marriage record 09 Feb1850 Clerkenwell Parish, London, Eng What I do not have is anything that connects Thomas Earl to his father George Earle on a census because of the early death of George in 1836. There really isn't anything to say our Thomas in Plumbstead is the Thomas Howell Earl baptized in London except for the closeness of Mary Ann Tullett's parents James and Sophia in Pariish of Pancras along with Thomas and Mary's daughter Clara's baptism in Pariish of Pancras in 1853 which says her father was a policeman. The fact that there is a Thomas Howell and Mary Ann with a daughter Eliza Rose just south of Pancras and who's father is a policeman is very suspicious. Does anyone have any ideas what I should look for to connect the Thomas and George generation? I do not know where to go from here. All ideas welcome. Thank you, Marcia Earl Canada
Hi Marcia, You can find out about Thomas'police service (i.e if he joined as EARLE or HOWELL) if you go to http://www.policeorders.co.uk/, use their search engine and email them. The 1851 census surname could just be an enumerator's error. Glad you have it sorted :) Anne Marcia Earl wrote: > Hello Listers, > > Very good news I have for those who helped me with the GEORGE EARLE family who were winecoopers and wine merchants who had the address 3 Great St. Thomas Apostle.
