    3. It's highly unlikely that, if the William Horne, Mariner, who arrived in 1853 is your man, he went to a Royal Naval Training School. He would almost certainly have called himself a 'naval officer' or 'seaman' in that case. Mariners were usually merchant seamen, merchant captains were 'master mariners'. I have many mariners and master mariners among my ancestors - they were all merchant seamen.
