I know the matter was raised on the lists some time ago, perhaps at the time of the proposals for modernising the civil registration process, but I do not recall anyone describing such a search in practice as opposed to the theory outlined in the existing legislation. I think it depends very much on the registration district. Birmingham Borough Council for example offer "general searches" - I have just applied for a couple so in a few days will perhaps be able to tell you how they went. Other registration districts will not even provide a certificate and just tell to apply through the GRO. Regards Peter
