    3. CRAMPTON James married Mary Ann LAMBERTH 17 Nov. 1834 St. James, Paddington.1835-1839 their abode was 19 Hertford Street. Son = Robert James CROMPTON bap. 29 May 1836, Dau.= Mary Ann CRAMPTON bap. 20 Aug. 1837 Trinity Church St.Marylebone. Occupation: 1836 Servant,1837 Cabinet Maker,1839 Gentleman's Servant. 1. 19 Hertford Street: would this be a Mayfair address? If so, it seems an upmarket address for my humble ancestor. 2. Did servants and their families live downstairs? Can I find out who the Master/mistress was (1835-1839)? 3. This address now the H.Q. of the Mayfair Islamic Centre? Is it the 2010 building the original 1835 building? Rob QLD, AUS.

    3. Hi Rob There was and is a Hertford Street in Mayfair (just off the southern end of Park Lane, behind the Hilton Hotel), but given the place of baptism of Mary Ann, I think it more likely that the Hertford Street in question was the one a mile or so away in St Pancras. It formed the upper end of what is now Whitfield Street, and was only a short distance from Trinity Church. The best map to see these locations is probably this one: http://london1868.com/weller28.htm. Hope this helps Caroline > > CRAMPTON James married Mary Ann LAMBERTH 17 Nov. 1834 St. James, > Paddington.1835-1839 their abode was 19 Hertford Street.
