Hi Nivard.. I am hoping he is buried in the ground..LOL.. I am searching for the burial plot of George Bartlett who died 25/6/1840 He was a soldier who died in London Hospital in the District of Whitechapel Co. Middlesex.aged 40. He was stationed in Hyde Park Barracks in the 1st Life Guards. I would love to know id he has a headstone as he is a mystery to me where his parentage is concerned and hope it might throw some light on things..if there is any way of finding out where he is buried I can get someone to take a photo of the headstone for me.. Mary Sydney
Hi Mary I am afraid the chances of finding a headstone for George are incredibly slim. The fact that he died in the London Hospital (now the Royal London Hospital) indicates that he was not from a family with means, as at that time hospitals were charitable institutions for the care of the poor (and for the education of doctors). Anyone who could afford it stayed well clear of them and was treated in their own home. There was insufficient space in churchyards and burial grounds even for the better off and the luxury of a private plot with a headstone was reserved for the rich who could be buried out of town or in family vaults. You can get an idea of how bad things were in Whitechapel by reading some of the contemporary accounts at http://www.burial.magic-nation.co.uk/bgwhitechapel.htm. This situation improved considerably as the century progressed, with private cemeteries opening up to cater for the middle classes and municipal cemeteries for the poor being established on the outskirts of the capital. London churchyards were officially closed in 1854, though many had already ceased to be used by this date. I believe that the London Hospital had its own burial ground at one stage (now presumably built over), and George may have been buried there. The hospital's earlier archives are still at the hospital and it might be worth emailing their archivist (rlharchives@bartsandthelondon.nhs.uk) to see if burial records survive. Hi Mary, I found a burial that might fit but there is no way of knowing for sure, from the details given, whether it is your George Bartlett or not. What I have found is on the Ancestry site, London England Deaths and Burials 1813-1980. Burials at St. Dunstan's church, Stepney, Middlesex. George Bartlett abode Mile End Old Town buried 3rd July 1840 aged 41. The fact that the age is out by a year over what information you have for your George. But that is neither here not there as it depends on what information the informants had. The informant who registered the death and the person arranging the burial could have been two different people with different ideas on George's age. I know this burial is about 8 days after your George died in the London Hospital but if, as Nivard Suggested, the hospital used George's body for research purposes then he might not have been buried for a few days after his death, people did tend to be buried within about 3 days of death. The Royal London Hospital, as it is called today, was, and still is, a teaching hospital and is not very far from St. Dunstan's church Stepney. Maybe, if the above is your George's burial, his case was an interesting one and the hospital might have used his body for research or teaching purposes. This would delay burial by a few extra days. I presume you have the death certificate for George, does that say if a post mortem was carried out at all? A post mortem would possibly delay the burial by a few extra days.
