Hi Carolyn, If you search the FreeBMD site for the same entries of death as you quote you will then be able to click on the name of the Registration District to bring up the details of that particular District Office and the places covered by it over time. At the bottom of that detailed page you will find the link to the office/s where the ancient registers are today. Click on the relevant link to find details of the address to contact. Some Registry Offices now have e.mail addresses by which you can contact them, though not all of those e.mail addresses have been added to the listing of contact details, to date. Many of them, if not all, now take card payments by letter of telephone call but do not have online payment facilities. In the case of the death at West Ham the registry offices which currently hold the registers from the old West Ham district are Newham, Waltham Forest & Redbridge. Redbridge is out in Essex, Waltham Forest is on the border between London & Essex and Newham would be the closest to Mile End, so I would start by contacting Newham registry office, the links show that they do have an e.mail address. Though I doubt very much that they would hold a death entry that occurred in Mile End, that would come into Tower Hamlets area not Newham or West Ham. But the lady in question might have moved on from Mile End before she died so could be in a register held currently by Newham Registrars. If you contact the Newham registrars office tell them what you can about the lady in question, say that she was most likely a spinster and give her occupation to see if either or both details match the 1902 entry. West Ham being noted as Essex is because many of the places that came into the West Ham reg. District are not in London, previously they were on the edge of London & Essex, some right bang on the border between the two counties. If it were me I would also check for her in the 1911 census to see if she was there, if you haven't already done so. This would perhaps cut down you time frame for looking for her death. As you say her sister moved away to Surrey maybe Jane also moved away from Mile End. She was born in Whitechapel July 1846 and lived around that area as a Staymaker all her life. I don't think she ever married and the last I can find of her is as a Boarder in Mile End Old Town in the 1901 census. >From the GRO Indexes I have found the following deaths but am not sure >which registry office to apply to to see if I have the correct one: 1. Apr-Jun 1902 Jane Ellen Moss Age 58 West Ham, Essex Vol 4a Pg 133 (seems the most likely but Essex puts me off) 2. Jan-Mar 1911 Jane Moss Age 66 Barnett Vol 3a Pg 216 3. Jane Moss Jan-Mar 1913 Age 69 London City Vol 1c pg 1>>
Jenny, I never realised I could do that. That information is so helpful as I never know which registry office to contact. I have solved the current problem with the help of others now (yes, she is in the workhouse in 1911) but it is extremely useful to remember for another time. I am very grateful your help.
