    1. [MDX] Sophia JOHNSON b abt 1823 Poplar
    2. Connie via
    3. Sophia JOHNSON was born around 1823 in Poplar but I have been unable to find a baptism for her. She married William David JOHNSON who was born 26 Dec 1818 in Deptford. I believe they may have been cousins. I found their marriage (5 June 1843, Limehouse) on Ancestry which gives her father as William, a shipwright. William David's father, John Plummer JOHNSON, was also given as a shipwright. Sophia's father seems to have been variously described as a ropemaker, a mariner and a fisherman, providing they are the same person. If I'm right, Sophia's mother was also Sophia maiden name unknown. Can anyone find Sophia jnr's baptism please? -- Connie http://oursalmons.wordpress.com/

    3. This is something that has long been awaited. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: FFHS-NEWS Relatives of adopted adults now able to trace family tree Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2014 03:38:40 -0400 From: News from the Federation of Family History Societies With thanks to Chris Paton The British GENES Blog (GEnealogy News & EventS) From: Department for Education and Edward Timpson MP First published: 25 September 2014 Part of: Improving the adoption system and services for looked-after children and Children and young people Children, grandchildren and other relatives of adopted adults can now trace back through their ancestors'€™ lives. Children, grandchildren and other relatives of adopted adults can now trace back through their ancestors'€™ lives - helping them to unearth their family history, discover more about their medical background and reach out to long-lost relatives under new rules introduced today. Previously, only the person adopted and their birth relatives were able to used specialised adoption agencies to help shed light on their family history and make contact with their biological family members. The new rules will extend this right to all relatives of adopted adults, from children and grandchildren to partners and adoptive relatives, allowing greater openness in adoption while ensuring adopted people have the right to a private, family life. For example, those who have lost a parent to cancer or a heart problem will be able to discover whether their grandparents or other birth relatives suffered from the same condition, given them the chance to seek advice and support. Children and Families Minister Edward Timpson, who has 2 adopted brothers, said: It's right that descendants and other relatives of adopted adults are able to access important information, such as medical records or genetic health conditions, which could impact upon how they live their life today. They should also be able to find out about important events from their past, as well as make contact with family members if they wish. This positive change will help thousands of people discover their place in history, while keeping important safeguards in place to protect the right to a private family life for those who were adopted. Julia Feast OBE, from the British Association for Fostering and Adoption (BAAF) said: The British Association for Adoption and Fostering is delighted that the government’s consultation about extending intermediary services to descendants of adopted people has now been published. We are very pleased that the government has extended the rights of descendants and other relatives to access an intermediary service whilst ensuring that the adopted person's rights are not overlooked and will be at the centre of the decision making. Today'€™s announcement (25 September 2014) is just the latest milestone in the government'€™s plan to overhaul support for adopted families. 8>< Notes to Editor: The government has today published new rules to make provision for intermediary services to facilitate contact between 'persons with a prescribed relationship'€™ and the birth relatives of a person adopted before 30 December 2005. The regulations will define '€˜persons with a prescribed relationship'€™ as anyone related to an adopted person by blood (including half-blood), marriage or civil partnership or by virtue of the adoption. This will include all relatives of the adopted person, including but not limited to the children and grandchildren of adopted persons. The regulations will ensure that that the consent of the adopted person is obtained before contact or information sharing is facilitated between persons with a prescribed relationship and birth relatives, other than: where a person with a prescribed relationship seeks non-identifying medical information from birth relatives of the adopted person and this can be shared by the intermediary agency without sharing identifying information where a person with a prescribed relationship wishes to make contact with a birth relative and the adopted person cannot be found, despite all reasonable steps having been taken where the adopted person has died or lacks capacity The 'Intermediary services for relatives of adopted people'€™ consultation is now available. The new rules will come into force by November 2014. 3. Is there anyone who can find Henry W. Hibbs (born Paddington 1845) and his wife Emma on the 1901 census? I've searched under every mistranscription I can think of and they don't show. They should have been living in the Notting Hill area, and Henry was a stonemason. Perhaps someone who has access to another provider apart from Ancestry will have more luck? Jeanette

    3. This is interesting as I've just found from Ancestry.com that my cousin Herbert Portland Dunlop Smith was awarded a medal of some kind for his service in the Merchant Navy during the war. The link from Ancestry only takes me to a record at the National Archives, so it looks as if I won't be finding out what the medal was. Since he's not a direct ancestor I haven't really got £3.50 to order the record. Jeanette -----Original Message----- From: Connie via Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 2:51 AM To: Middx Subject: [MDX] WWII medals I have just received a message from my cousin who's been going through our great uncle's WWII service record. It included a document "which appeared to indicate that he was entitled to some award/medal for his naval service in the Atlantic 1942/43 and Burma in 1945.". Neither my cousin nor I have seen these medals, so cannot describe any ribbons. It may be our great uncle never applied for them. If he didn't, I'm not sure we'd be able to now. The Burma Star we know about but the 1942/43 Atlantic one has us puzzled. In order to have been awarded the Burma Star, my great uncle would have had to have been awarded the 1939-45 Star, likewise the Atlantic Star /but/ if the final 6 months ended on 8 May 1945, the 1939-45 Star would not have been awarded. Only two medals were mentioned: the Atlantic and Burma Stars. I was sent a link to the various medals by a kind gentleman http://www.rogersstudy.co.uk/medals/ww2_stars/stars.html#atlantic Scroll up or down for the various medals. If he did have them and they've been lost, then they've been lost. Commercial ones won't have the same meaning. It was the Atlantic 1942/43 one that was the puzzle. 3. Hello Jan Not researching the family, but they are fairly easy to find, I think. In 1911, they are at RG14; Piece: 7434; Schedule Number: 79. There are a large number of other siblings. Eva's marriage certificate: Marriages Dec 1918 Hawkes Eva Herbert Edmonton 3a 1074 Herbert Leonard A Hawkes Edmonton 3a 1074 will confirm her father's name and occupation. If this is the right family, then Eva's mother is likely to have been Ellen DEAN, who married George HAWKES (a gun maker) at St Philip's, Birmingham in April 1890. The marriage register entry is available on Ancestry. Let me know if you need a copy.
