My gr gr grandfather, Frederick Grant, was baptized at St. John the Evangelist Smith Square in Westminster in February 1840 and was born in December 1839. The church record records his father's occupation as "Messenger in Exchequer Office" and the father's name as John Grant. Today after some google searches I found records for a J. Grant and a John Grant who served as a Messenger for the Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1820 to 1840 when he retired at the age of 62. I've been trying to find more information on John, as it appears likely that he is the father of my Frederick. Frederick joined the Royal Marines around 1855 in Woolwich, Kent. Would anyone have some hints on where to find more information? What would have led to him having obtained the position? Anything during his time as messenger? He may have died shortly after his retirement, and I'm checking into some of those possibilities. any input appreciated. Stephen Pegler
A BUCKS GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY TALK The WHITECHAPEL MURDERS of the '90s have fascinated people for over a century, especially those whose ancestors lived in the East End in those scary times. Jack the Ripper was blamed - and has been identified with various Victorian doctors, a Royal Prince, and more recently, on very shaky evidence, a Russian Jew. One of the investigating team was a P C John Neill, and (in costume) his near namesake, John Neal, a former London policeman, has studied the crimes more searchingly, in the light of modern techniques, and come to the conclusion that JACK THE RIPPER WAS INNOCENT -OK? Come and hear his theories, agree or disagree, on Saturday February 14 at the Southcourt Community Centre, Prebendal Ave. Aylesbury HP21 8LF (parallel with Oxford Rd A418, just off ring road) 2 for 2.30pm Directions and details: www.bucksgs.org.uk or eve@varneys.org.uk or 01844 291631 Easy parking on site. Any descendants out there You can do a fairly simple check (using freebmd) by putting 'surname Nathan', name of spouse 'Barnard' I did check the Golding-Barnard combination which showed no obvious chioldren 1912-30. However, given these two names and the other pair. it seems likely that the family were Jewish. Although they were pretty conscientious about registering formalities, they may at some stage have used a variation reflecting an original German-style surname ( Barnet, Goldschmidt, Goldfaber etc. I do know that the grandfather of an old friend of mine (who was a furniture manufacturer in Bethnal Green) morphed to Golding in the 1880s, and had thought it possible there was a connection, but this didn't work out simply. MAKING ENDS MEET Too much week at the end of your money is nothing new. Shortage of ready cash could affect people on any level and the solyution could be selling the family silver, mortgaging, gnawing it out, migrating, going on the parish, poaching, pawning the old man's suit, moonlight flitting, going on the game, nicking off stalls, or, in extremis, turning to the Charity Organisation Society (aka Crawl or Starve). Eve McLaughlin tells the Bucks Genealogical Society all about it on Sat January 10 at 2.30 (doors 2pm) at the Southcourt Community Centre, Prebendal Ave, Aylesbury HP21 8LF If you live within reach, come and learn survival skills .All welcome -details eve@varneys.org.uk or 01844 291631
I have, as a given name, the married surname of my fathers aunt because she had no children of her own. Unfortunately nothing to do with inheriting anything! My grandfather Richard Hockings was born in Lympstone, Devon in 1865. He moved to London, Drury Lane, to work for his aunt Ann Shears (Hockings) and her husband Richard in 1881. I would like to know why he was given the middle name House (his aunt's husband's surname) when it was more normal for a child to take their mothers maiden name (hers was Coventon). Have you considered that Richard House Hockings was the godson of his aunt or her husband? Children were often given a godparents name especially if it was thought that they might be mentioned in the godparent's will. This happened in a branch of my family when a child was given his godfather's surname of West as his name, the godfather was incredibly rich but my branch, to which the child belonged, were not!! Its not hard to work out the reasoning of the parents is it. Just an idea, hope it helps, Pauline Taylor Colchester.
