Hello Nivard, The William John Horne who married Louisa Anna Wilson and who died at Bibbenluke in 1899, was definitely the son of Swithin & Eliza Horne. We have original letters written by his younger brother in London in 1885 to William here in Australia. William John Horne definitely came to Australia sometime in the 1850's. The family have a story about "Sea Shanties" he used to sing. We are just trying to find some sort of proof of his travel to Australia. Maybe he was in the Merchant navy in the 1851 Census, but unless he was in port at the time, I am not sure where else to turn for that info either. Thank you also to Anne for her reply as well. It's just occurred to me that if he was on the Wellington as a mariner, he might have been part of the crew. In which case, you might be able to find the crew list at the Maritime Museum in Greenwich. http://www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/archive/catalogue/ Anne South Australia Anne Chapman wrote: > Hello Nivard, > The William John Horne who married Louisa Anna Wilson and who died > at Bibbenluke in 1899, was definitely the son of Swithin& Eliza Horne. > We have original letters written by his younger brother in London in > 1885 to William here in Australia. > William John Horne definitely came to Australia sometime in the > 1850's. Hi Listers, I am wondering if any of you wonderful people, might be able to push me in the right direction, to find my Great Grandfather’s Marine records. My Great Grandfather, William John Horne, was born at 9 Munster Street, Regents Park, Middx on the 15 December 1833 to parents Swithin & Eliza Horne (nee Matthews). William was christened on 7 January 1834 at St Pancras Old Church, where his parents were married and his 12 sisters and brothers were christened. William was not with the family at the above address in the 1841 Census, reason, away at school? So far we have not been able to locate him. I have just learnt, from my cousin, that there was a training School for Midshipmen at the Royal Naval College at New Cross, London. This School began in 1845 and took cadets mainly from the sons of serving officers but also from others who could afford to pay. Swithin Horne was a Master Butcher and owned quite a few shops in the Regents Park area. William arrived in Australia in the 1850's. We do have the record of a William Horne who arrived at the Melbourne port in January 1853 on the ship "Wellington" as a Mariner, aged 19. The right age for him at that time. We know he did have an Uncle John Matthews and family living in Melbourne at that time. He married Louisa Anna Wilson on 2 May 1861 at Bibbenluke, near Bombala NSW Louisa having been born in Sydney in 1846. Is there anyone with access to the records for that Training School? The Royal Naval College at Greenwich was too late for him. Thank you, one & all for what information you are able to help me with. Maybe this information could help others in the same situation. Anne
It's highly unlikely that, if the William Horne, Mariner, who arrived in 1853 is your man, he went to a Royal Naval Training School. He would almost certainly have called himself a 'naval officer' or 'seaman' in that case. Mariners were usually merchant seamen, merchant captains were 'master mariners'. I have many mariners and master mariners among my ancestors - they were all merchant seamen. Hi Anne If he is not with his family in 1841 is it not more likely that he died ? When you say "He married Louisa Anna Wilson" I am not sure if you mean the man who arrived in Australia or your man ? Yes, I found it very interesting, particularly in regard to the reasons for it starting in the first place. Anne Neil & Jan Hearn wrote: > A very intersesting article. The name in German would actually be Grünholz (with an umlaut over the 'u'). The pronunciation of the German word 'grün' is almost identical to English 'green'. When foreigners resided in England their names often changed - in spelling too - to match the way English people pronounced their name. In the case of this name, the fact that English has no umlaut would be a further reason to change from German to English spelling. It also made it less likely that the person so named would immediately 'stand out' as foreign. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. > To Anne and Nivard...... Thank you for the advice for searching ( Mc Carthy/Mccarthy) on Ancestry. I had not thought of removing the space between the "c's". Many thanks to Anne & Bill for their help with the Death Index for my Ellen Mc Carthy. I haven't used the Free BDM site in the past, only Ancestry. I will now be able to order the certificate. Regards, Roger (Oz). _________________________________________________________________ If It Exists, You'll Find it on SEEK. Australia's #1 job site http://clk.atdmt.com/NMN/go/157639755/direct/01/
I couldn't find it on Ancestry either, then I remembered that the Ancestry search engine doesn't automatically find mccarthy and mc carthy in the same search as FreeBMD does so you need to try it both ways. Hi Everyone, could someone have a look at the 1861 census please & see address & who was living with HENRY WILCOX St george Hanover Square. Thank you very much. Sue
On Free BMD there are two possible answers to your question about Ellen McCarthy. 1. Aged 30. December quarter 1887, Whitechapel, Vol 1c, page 267. 2. Aged 58. December quarter 1890, Whitechapel, Vol 1c, page 271 Hope this solves your problem. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger Mc Carthy" <mccarthyrp@hotmail.com> To: <middlesex_county_uk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 10:25 AM Subject: [MDX] Ellen Mc Carthy Death Index Needed > > Hello fellow listers, > > I need help to find the Death Index for Ellen Mc Carthy. > > > > In the 1881 Census: (RG11 Piece:0448 Folio: 94 Page:2) She was living in > the Cohens > > buildings Whitechapel, with husband John and children. > > > > In the 1891 Census: (RG12 Piece:283 Folio: 71 Page: 34), John is a > widower, with 3 > > children, still living at the same address. > > > > Ellen must have died somewhere between 1881 and 1891 > > I have looked on Ancestry for the Death Index, but no luck. > > Could somebody else please have a look to see if I have missed her? > > > > Regards, > > Roger (Oz). > > _________________________________________________________________ > New, Used, Demo, Dealer or Private?
