Hi Michael, Unfortunately you can't tell your PC to behave as if it's in the UK. Each computer/internet connection that is made is logged with a specific number, and the country where the connection is made is identified. It does make the idea of a "World Wide Web" seem rather ridiculous when you can't access things from another country doesn't it? All the best, Jon
Van Diemen's Land was the previous name for Tasmania, one of the Australian states. The following is from a website - http://www.tasmaniatrip.com/history-of-tasmania.html "The European history of Tasmania is relatively recent and was initially colonized as a place to imprison Australian convicts shipped over from England's overcrowded prison system. Tasmania was first discovered by a Dutch explorer called Abel Tasman in 1642. He named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, after his sponsor, the Governor of the Dutch East Indies Anthony van Diemen. This was initially how in the history of Tasmania the island became known as Van Diemen's Land. The first settlement of Tasmania was made by the British at Risdon Cove in 1803 when a small party sent from the colony of Sydney were ordered to stop the French from claiming the island. A second settlement was established shortly afterwards in 1804 in Sullivan's Cove on the western side of the Derwent, where fresh water was more plentiful. The latter settlement became known as Hobart Town or Hobarton, later shortened to Hobart, after the British Colonial Secretary of the time, Lord Hobart. The settlement at Risdon was later abandoned... Van Diemen's Land was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales, with its own judicial establishment and Legislative Council in 1825." I think it is unlikely as the BBC gets the majority of its revenue through the TV licence and has to justify its balance sheet to the British taxpayer. Presumably the BBC supplements its income by sell the rights to BBC programmes to other broadcasters overseas. Overseas folks do not contribute to the TV licence, and making the broadcasts available outside the UK might compromise the price for which the BBC could sell their output overseas. I do not know how to do it but tell your computer that it is in England or ask someone in England to record it for you and send it electronically I do believe that you can receive it UK TV if you have a satellite dish pointed at a UK satellite. Hi Nivard, It was very interesting to see that he was on the British WDYTYA. I loved the way Van De Mans Land was listed. This is actually Tasmania. Thanks for letting us know about it. Hi all, I felt sure that the BBC did allow people overseas to tune in, but I was totally wrong. Explanations here: http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/download_programmes/outsideuk and http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/download_programmes/download_uk For those in the UK, this link will take you to the page listing the programmes broadcast so far in the current series of WDYTYA: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007t575/episodes/player It is possible to download the programmes to your computer. There are 2 versions, a standard version and a lower quality version for PDA's etc. Sadly, this also applies only to those living in the UK. Apparently the BBC are aware of the high demand for those outside the UK being able to enjoy BBC programmes, so hopefully in the not too distant future you may well be able to watch WDYTYA via the Internet. I hope this may be of help to some on the list. Best wishes, Jon
Hi Hazel Have you got Hannah's will (available via www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline)? And there is also a will for a John LAWSON of Finchley in 1787 which might be relevant. And a small correction - Whetstone *was* partly in the ancient parish of Finchley, but is now very much a place in its own right. Totteridge Lane is a very snazzy address! Best wishes Caroline > Good evening > I am looking for a Henry Lawson son of John and Hannah Lawson nee > Summers who lived during the mid 1770's in Totteridge Lane, Village of > Whetstone (today Finchley), London. > > I would be interested in anyone who feels they may have a connection to > this Lawson family other names of interest are HILL, GYHON, DILWORTH. > > John Lawson the father was a dry goods chandler who married twice his > first wife was Alice Dilworth. > > Warm Regards > Hazel Blacktown, NSW
Hi Nivard, Was busy tonight so missed it. thank goodness for BBC I-player! This has been a great series, apart from Rupert Everett, but that's only my opinion. Looking forward to catching up on Jason's programme in the next day or two. cheers, Jon
