Have a family whose name was changed but nothing legal for a name change can I find. Christina SARGENT b.1845....... married 1868 Evan DAVIS b. 1847 They had two children. Christiana Elizabeth DAVIS. b. 1869 Arthur Evan DAVIS b. 1870 Evan DAVIS died 1870 and Christina remarried 1873 Thomas CAMERON b. 1848 They had two children Hannah CAMERON b. 1874 Thomas CAMERON b. 1876 When Thomas married Christina he insisted her two children use the name CAMERON, thought no papers can be found to say they did in fact change their names. When Christiana Elizabeth got married in 1897 to Arthur JENNINGS, she used the name DAVIS. When Arthur Evan DAVIS got married 1922 to Maud Ellen Gertrude ARNARD (nee COOPER) (my great aunt), he used the name CAMERON and all the descendants from then have used the name CAMERON. According to family information, Arthur was a bit of a rogue, he used both names, depending what he was doing, he joined the Navy at a very young age, was champion boxer for the Navy, all of which I can no reference or information about. If any one has this family in their tree and has more information about how you can just use another name, boxing or Navy records, I would love to hear from them. Pam.....NZ

Hi Pam Under English common law, a person has the right to call themselves whatever they choose, provided there is no fraudulent intent. Moreover, children taking on their stepfather's name was common practice and convenient as it meant they had the same surname as their mother. It was equally normal for these children to quote their "birth name" (i.e their natural father's name) when marrying. Do you have evidence of Mr CAMERON "insisting" that they use it against their will? Hope this helps Caroline Sent from my iPad On 18 Jul 2012, at 05:30, "LittleMiracles" <[email protected]> wrote: > > > If any one has this family in their tree and has more information about how you can just use another name, boxing or Navy records, I would love to hear from them. > > Pam.....
Hi List I am researching my grandmothers sisters and brothers from West Hartlepool Co Durham In particular CHARLOTTE CLARA SCHRODER nee PAYNE. Charlotte was born in October 1872 in Cromer Norfolk. She married RICHARD WILLIAM LEOPOLD Schroder in 1899 in West Hartlepool. The couple has to my knowledge 3 children RICHARD born 1901, Leopold born 1902 and died September 1908, and LILY born 1904. Lily married THOMAS TOMLINSON from Greatham and had seveal children including Ronald and Alice. In the early 40's late 30's the family moved to Brentford Middlesex and after Charlottes husband died she moved to Brentford (Basildene Rd) where Charlotte died in 1947. Any information on Charlotte would be gratefully appreciated and what happened to her grandchildren Anyone needs any help searching through censii I would willingly oblige Cheers Anne Thompson

Hello there: I am coming to this list in hopes that someone can help. A couple of years ago I was looking for parents of Charles Cole Pilon. I have found them. He was the son of James Cole b. abt. 1840 and Charlotte Jane Pilon (unmarried) b. 1857 who lived together for many years as husband and wife. I have been able to trace the Pilon family back and now am trying to find the Cole family. Here is what I have on James Cole. He was born abt. 1840. He was a looking glass maker and cabinet maker. In 1896 he was living at 312 Brick Lane Spitalfield East. I have found a death registration for James Cole b. abt 1840, date of registration - Apr May Jun 1896 registration district Bethnal Green. Thanks so much to David, Eve, J and Anne for your very helpful replies. Eve, My relative, Emma WOOLSEY, also had Charles and Sarah as the witnesses at her wedding in 1831 at St Pancras. This makes it very likely that Emma, Daniel and Charles were siblings......there were more brothers and sisters baptised at St Mary Hornsey to parents, Elizabeth and William, no sign of a baptism for Emma however. I've discovered a death record on Ancestry.com for Charles WOOLSEY who was buried on 7th December 1849 at Islington, Middlesex at the age of 50 years. I am unable to decipher his address in the entry and wondered if someone might help please. I have had no luck in finding Charles in the 1841 census either . Many thanks, Jan in beautiful Queensland
> > I have had no luck in finding Charles in the 1841 census either . Nor have I - but Daniel Woolsey is there, and Charles and Sarah witnessed his wedding in 1834. (rather lovely writing) Daniel was born in Highgate in c 1806, and this may be worth pursuing to find Charles too. I've discovered a death record on Ancestry.com for Charles WOOLSEY who was buried on 7th December 1849 at Islington, Middlesex at the age of 50 years. I am unable to decipher his address in the entry and wondered if someone might help please. He was buried from the Workhouse. There was also a 'male stillborn' buried in 1822 so it looks as if he was around in that area. EVE Author of The McLaughlin Guides for Family Historians Secretary, Bucks Genealogical Society

If that's correct and they have the layout available, Pat may be able to contact them. Otherwise it'd be the cemetery supervisor or the local authority's parks and leisure department. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Canterbury Archives have this record of a marriage between James Wright INGATE , of Saint Dunstan, Stepney, in the County of Middlesex, a Bachelor, and Margaret Ann BROWNE of Margate, Kent, Spinster, at St. John's Church, Margate, on 5th November 1830. The marriage was by Banns, Officiating Minister Francis BARROW. Both signed their names. Witnesses were Nicholas Edward Wileman BROWNE and Louisa BRADSHAW. Hope this is helpful to a researcher.
Hi Pat, It must be sods law! Although no longer living near by, I was at a friends funeral there a couple of days ago. I am in the area about every 6 to 8 weeks so may be able to oblige then. It would help if you could obtain some sort of location plan for me as it's quite vast. Regards, John.
