Hallo Please give all the information you know. It makes it a lot easier for the list to help you if we know details. There are several possible marriages for John. Why did you decide John married Julia Charlotte BROWN? Marriages Sep 1872 HYLAND John Kensington 1a 425 married either BROWN Julia Charlotte Kensington 1a 425 *OR* EDWARDS Charlotte Kensington 1a 425 Marriages Dec 1877 HYLAND John Kensington 1a 339 married either BURNS Mary Kensington 1a 339 *OR* MüNCH Maria Kensington 1a 339 Marriages Mar 1873 HYLAND John Chelsea 1a 405 married either DENNIS Mary Helen Chelsea 1a 405 *OR* DYER Sarah Ann Chelsea 1a 405 Marriages Sep 1876 HYLAND John St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 732 married either HARRIS Eliza St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 732 *OR* WEBB Emma St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 732 Marriages Sep 1873 HYLAND John James Hackney 1b 776 married either SHOLL Sarah Hackney 1b 776 *OR* TEGG Jemima Sarah Hackney 1b 776 Marriages Jun 1874 HYLAND John Tracey Whitechapel 1c 797 married either FOGARTY Ellen Whitechapel 1c 797 *OR* LEWIS Elizabeth Whitechapel 1c 797 I cannot see a Margaret HYLAND who married in Kensington or Chelsea Registration Districts between 1870 and 1880 which would be the same area as her brother.. Between those years there is only one marriage that may be applicable but Poplar Registration District is to the east side of London. Kensington is to the west side of London. Marriages Mar 1875 HYLAND Margaret Poplar 1c 1016 married either AKINS Matthew Poplar 1c 1016 *OR* MILTON Joseph Poplar 1c 1016 There are three other marriages, all unlikely, unless there is more information you have than you are telling us. The Margaret HYLAND/James MAYLER marriage took place in 1875 but in Blackburn Registration District. Blackburn is in Lancashire which is in the north east of England. That's the opposite end of the country to Middlesex. It's not the same area. It's unlikely this is the marriage for your Margaret. The other two marriages between 1870 and 1880 were in Canterbury Registration District which is Kent and Wolverhampton Registration District which is Staffordshire and Shropshire. It crossed county boundaries. That area is now known as West Midlands. I think perhaps you need to order some marriage certificates to see who your people did marry. If you do NOT give the reference you will be able to give reference checking points. If the certificate you order does not match the checking points, you will get a full refund. If they do, you will get the certificate. Connie in London

    3. Yes I have a copy of the actual marriage records and since have been sent e-mail a census return for 1861 listing Mary and John with Malachy and Bridget along with 2 children John born 1855 and Margaret born 1859 who do not appear with this family in 1862 in Illinois USA. They appear in 1861 with the family. Apparently when I did some searches on the internet on Google and Ancestry.com I have come up with the fact that a John Hyland born about 1854-55 married a Julia Charlotte Brown Kensington Chelsea Middlesex and a Margaret born 1859 married either a Joseph MILTON or James Mayler. I have yet to find or obtain copies of each of these records. Johns' parents were Thomas and Catherine Hyland when he married my Mary or Mary Ann Dwyer in Stepney Middlesex England. SO if I can prove by the marriages for John and Margaret I can place them as children of my ancestors. I have been working on this family for about 20 years give or take. I am going to need to find the marriage record for Malachy and Bridget to see if indeed he is or was the brother of my John and the Uncle of John son of John and Mary or Mary Ann.

Hi Charles No obvious sign of him in any of the Eng/Wales census after 1857 or in the Medical Registers A google search found Tuck, Herbert Fellows March 5, 1932 Orangeville 12522 On <http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onduffer/civil-registrations/Deaths/1932.html#t> So unless its another man he may have emigrated to Canada perhaps after serving with the Army, I notice his brother was an ensign in 1851 Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 04/08/2012 11:29, Charles Hawker wrote: > The above couple married in Paddington,on the 3rd. 3. ok John and Mary (Dwyer) Hyland married 1853 Stepney Middlesex England, 2 children born to these two people, JOhn born 1855 and Margaret born 1859. Apparently the children stayed behind and lived with Malachy and Bridget Hyland. I found a John Hyland matching his date of birth on a Google Search saying he married Julia Charlotte Brown in Kensington Chelsea Middlesex. Also found a Margaret living with Malachy and Bridget and married either Joseph MILTON or James MAYLER. Apparently it was decided that the children stay with their family rather than travel with their parents to the US where they settled in Iowa in the US. Who was Malachy|? Who was Bridget prior to her becoming Mrs. Malachy Hyland? Was Malachy a brother to my John born Ireland? Mary Dwyer who married John apparently born in Edinburgh Scotland in Midlothia but need an 1851 census index check. Posted to [email protected] and [email protected]

Hallo I was told never to assume anything but to use thoughts as the starting point for a line of research. When did John and Margaret marry and in which registration district? If you have look in the next census after the marriage for the two men you should be able to find which of them is Margaret's husband. Malachi could be a brother, uncle, cousin or other relative. To find out the connection you would have to research him using Family Search, FreeREG, censuses and similar sources. There need not have been a rift at all. It was not uncommon for parents to leave young children with relatives when they first went to a new country so the parents could find a home and work before the children joined them. If the older children had become settled with their relatives maybe a decision was made to leave them in England instead. Perhaps the parents didn't intend to stay for long. It would have been cheaper for them to have sailed without their family. I think it would have been quite a frightening but exciting experience to travel to America in the mid 1800s especially not knowing what to expect or would be found. The schemes encouraging workers to emigrate would have played up the positive aspects and played down or ignored the negative aspects. Connie in London

    3. I have been looking for Ships Passenger records for 1861 as they were in the US by 1862 where they had a daughter born in McLean Co IL USA. Nothing much found most records 11860 and 1862. Not much for 1861. Need to know if son John and daughter Margaret were with them when they came here as John died in 1878 as a widower having 6 children living with him as his wife died in 1872 possibly in childbirth. There was a daughter Margaret born 1862, Elizabeth born 1863, James born 1864, Mary born 1867, Thomas Patrick born 1869 and daughter Katherine born 1872.

Where did the first two children John and Margaret disappear to? Did they die early on and then John and Mary came to the States? Can anyone help clear up this mystery? Thanks

    2. Elaine Jefferson
    3. I must thank the folk who have tried to offer help, but it seems to me that the family will stay in the dark for a long time yet. John French died 1848 5 Gloucester Place Regents Park and his son Thomas was born at 5 Gloucester Place Regents Park, 1844 and with this in mind, perhaps all the other kids were born there too. I can get hold of the Pancras registers but there are many to trawl thru There is a little more on Ann French nee Cruse. In her 2nd marriage here in Melbourne she added GRANVILLE and when she died the 2nd spouse added the name on the Death Cert With his extra name I then checked Free BMD for any French kids with this Granville and up popped a female so, I ordered the DEATH for this Charlotte Granville French and it turned out NOT to be related to Ann or John, but really who knows. Re looking at Thomas French (son) kids born Sydney & Melbourne OZ he named one of his kids Henry French ( after his brother ) but this one died aged 12 months, and he had another son Sydney and he lived for many years, and another son he named Thomas Charles James French, Alfred Edward, so Thomas must have known his siblings and now I am beginning to think mother left her kids just taking her son Thomas to Australia along with her niece Sarah who married Donald Fraser, I have found a descendant of this family (Fraser) but unfortunately she doesn't know very much just mostly on the Fraser which I don't want to become involved with Just FRENCH!!!! What a pity there isn't 1831 around today, I know it would only show head of household. but anything would help.and I have seen and printed the 1851 Census showing Thomas French as being a nephew to Richard BAND or Bend as it looks like. This person born Berkshire?? and she Hertfordshire Will try and follow this man to his grave if possible!! Thank you for all Elaine in still cold Melbourne sun is out from under the clouds for a little while
