From Post Boy ( 1695 ) ( London, England ), June 15, 1721 - June 17 1721; Issue 4977. Charlwood LAWTON of Northampton Esq., fell from his horse near Kensington on Monday last, and died immediately, much lamented.
Hello, Thanks to Peter Calver's "brick wall challenges" in his Lost Cousins Newsletter, I have been trying to find new ways of accessing information about my Rawlins family in Middlesex. Yesterday, I found something that may hold possible clues to the identity of my 3rd great grandfather, Samuel Rawlins, watch finisher, who baptized his three children in Oct 1845 at St. Barnabas Finsbury. As a list member pointed out, this was a "mass baptism" . In searching names I found the family of Samuel Ferdinand Stanley and his wife Mary Rawlins Pinnick Stanley. Most of their children were baptized between 1820 and 1835 at St. Barnabas Finsbury and the address given for most of the baptisms was Rahere Street. Stanley appears to have made stained glass. Looking at records for Mary Rawlins Pinnick Stanley, it seems that she came from Hampshire and was the daughter of a John Pinnick and a Mary Davis Rawlins. The Stanleys moved to Clerkenwell by 1835. Their son Samuel F. Stanley became a watchmaker with two assistants in Clerkenwell. I should add that Alfred James Rawlins, a watchmaker from Portsea, Hampshire was in business in the 1830s in Clerkenwell. While my ancestors were living on Rahere Street some time after the Stanleys, I cannot help noting the connection to St. Barnabas Finsbury. I have looked at Directories for Rahere Street and found no Rawlins listings in the 1840s, however, I would love to find directories online for Middlesex from the 1830s to see if I could actually find an address for the Stanleys. Finally, having researched the baptisms from 10/26/1845 I found four people in the watch and jewelry trade living on Rahere Street, including my ancestors. While most of the records are listed alphabetically, the last few pages of names seemed to have been entered arbitrarily. A few entries from my Samuel Rawlins was an entry for a John Steward and wife Kitty. They baptized two young children, Samuel and James. James Steward Sr. is listed as a watch maker. I have been wondering if this is the same James H. Steward listed later in Loomes' Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World and the same James H. Steward found in the 1851 census. Unfortunately, this entry lists a wife Aquilla and two children born within a year or so of the census. Children and wife listed in the baptism are not found anywhere. The only Kitty Steward that I have found in census records was a 40 year old woman from Ireland visiting relatives in Liverpool in 1841. Perhaps this is the same person, but she appears to be considerably older than the above James H. Steward. I continue to "plug" away at this, If anyone has thoughts I would appreciate it. Usually these brick walls contain surprising twists and turns. Thanks, Bev W
Hi Jan I have had a good look but did not find them in 1861 However there are several parts of the 1861 missing, it is quite possible they were in one of them or were simply missed altogether, many were If Samuels death was registered in Mile End in 1880, the most likely death reg for Sarah is the one in 1867 I would have thought , that may have an address which may help although its a long time after the 1861 There are a couple of possibles for S B born around 1800 in the 1861 in case they were in an institution Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 07/09/2012 16:19, Jan Paton wrote: > Hello all you helpful people! > > In 1851 my gggrandfather Samuel BOWDEN b 1800 (St. Andrew Holborn ) is > living in Patriot St. ( just south of Commercial Rd ) with his wife Sarah (b > 1801 Canterbury) and children Edwin, Mary and George. Hello all you helpful people! In 1851 my gggrandfather Samuel BOWDEN b 1800 (St. Andrew Holborn ) is living in Patriot St. ( just south of Commercial Rd ) with his wife Sarah (b 1801 Canterbury) and children Edwin, Mary and George. He is an engineer. By 1871, Samuel is a widower and an inmate in Mile End Old Towm Workhouse. There appears to be no sign of either Samuel or Sarah in 1861 although I have located all the children. I've 'trawled' the roads around the area they lived in in 1851 and used every combination I can think of for names etc. I've looked at all the areas that could be missing in 1861, but their whereabouts remain a mystery. Sarah obviously dies before 1871 and there are a couple of Death regs. for Whitechapel which are possibilities so I may send for the certs. I have a possible death for Samuel in 1880 ( he is not located in 1881 ). Can anyone help, please??!! Jan

I abandoned my search for my Pank line, some years ago, when I hit a brickwall.I had traced them in the St.Giles in the fields parish, to parents,Henry and Mary,in the early 1800s.I searched the actual parish records at the church (they had not been deposited),but could not find Henry and Mary's marriage. The I.G.I. showed a marriage in Portsea in 1799 of a Henry to Mary Lee.I visited the Winchester R.O. and since I could find no subsequent baptisms for this couple, thought that they may have moved to London after the marriage and perhaps be "mine". Can any lister, please advise how I may proceed.I have access to Ancestry at my local library. Regards,Charles
The agreement by which LMA had been administering a temporary limited access service to the Hammersmith and Fulham Archives Centre came to its scheduled end on 31 May 2012 after almost a year. During that time, an archivist from LMA, was supported by a team of enthusiastic local volunteers managed by the Fulham Society. Westminster City Archives took over responsibility from LMA on 1 June 2012. From The Morning Post and Gazetteer ( London, England ), July 10, 1802; Issue 10535. The very splendid desert service, the whole of cut glass, is about to be sent to Russia, from the Manufactory of Messrs. HANCOCK and SHEPHERD. The service consists of six dozen plates, the same number of decanters, water-glasses, etc. of the most exquisite workmanship. The ice pails are wonderfully beautiful. The branched lights are about three feet in height, and equally deserving admiration. The whole complete is said to be worth five thousand pounds. The warehouse of Messrs. HANCOCK has been the morning lounge of the fashionables for many days; and the exhibition is certainly the most beautiful display of the combined exertions of taste, industry, and ingenuity ever before witnessed in this or any other country.
I have now found that Audrey Turner was born in South Africa so not linked to Rdward Turner and Dorothy Markwell. Thanks to all who have supplied background on Audrey's ballet career internationally. Still hopeful of finding a good photo. Les H., Napier.
Thank you Nivard & JK for your help. I checked Hillfield Rd & Elsworthy Rd and they aren't even on the same page as Flask Walk in my old AZ of London. All I know is that my Grandmother much admired the posh china of the people she visited at Flask Walk, I guess I will just have to keep wondering. Now all my research has hit brick walls I'm just trying to add little bits of interest. My lot have proved to be very ordinary, no jail birds, no workhouses, no war heroes, only a couple of wills and very few photo's. Oh I forgot just one apprentice. Thanks again Sheila NSW
I think I’ve got it figured out. I’m not sure I got back to everyone who em’d me privately to say thanks. If I did, thanks again, if I didn’t, thanks for your help. Carol in Victoria, Canada
Thank you very much Judy for that information,I will send for the Death Certificate.I am most grateful. Regards,Charles p.s. My original mail is stuck in the Outbox,so please excuse any subsequent duplication.
