Alpena-Sanilac County MI Archives Obituaries.....McDONALD, Daniel May 29, 1903 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Donna Cromwell [email protected] May 28, 2007, 10:50 pm The Alpena Evening News, May 30, 1903 DANIEL McDONALD A Well Known Alpena Boy Died Yesterday at Ann Arbor Daniel, the son of Alex McDonald of Ossineke died at Ann Arbor yesterday afternoon, where he had gone last Saturday night to have an operation performed. The sad news was received to the city last evening through a message to Dr. C.M. Williams, who was instructed to inform the young man's relatives. The news was hard to believe. The young man had left Alpena in apparent good health for an operation that was known to be of no immediate danger. When his brother Angus was informed of his death he could hardly realize what it meant - in fact he could not believe that the Dan McDonald referred to was his brother. The sad news was verified however when he telephoned to Ann Arbor for further particulars. What makes the death all the harder to bear, and all the more difficult to understand is the fact that the unfortunate young man died before an instrument was used. He had been placed upon the operating room table, and the chloroform had but been administered when he suddenly expired before the attending physician had made the first move toward using the knife. The operation to which the young man was to submit was for the removal of a cystic tumor which had developed below his left ear. This affliction was not of recent origin as he had already been operated upon in this city four or five times. It did not interfere with the young man's work to any great extent, but of late it had become somewhat more aggravating, and he concluded to go to the University hospital at Ann Arbor for an operation that promised to affect a complete cure. He was advised by the physicians whom he consulted that the operation was one which he need not fear - consequently, when the word came that he had died, his family and friends could hardly realize that such was possible. Danny, as he was familiarly called was born and raised in this city. He was 22 years and five months old, and until 3 years ago resided with his parents in this city. When his father removed to Ossineke to take up a farm Danny also secured a small tract of land, and started what would have been a most prosperous farm. His death is a sad blow to his parents, brothers and sisters. No bad deed was ever known to have been committed by Danny McDonald. He was a model youth - a hard working, God-fearing young man. His death will cause profound grief not only among the members of his family, but among a large number of friends. Aside from a heartbroken father and mother, he is survived by two brothers, Angus and Willie, and three sisters, Mrs. E.R. Getty, Grace and Jessie. Instructions have been wired to ship the remains at once. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 from the M. E. church, Rev. George N. Kennedy, officiating. The deceased was a member of the Union Life Guards, belonging to the Post at Ossineke. Additional Comments: Daniel McDONALD [aka Donald W. MacDONALD]was born December 4, 1880 in Flynn Twp., Sanilac County, Michigan, not in Alpena as the article says. His parents were Alexander MacDONALD and Sarah Jane McGREGOR. He was buried in Lot 50, Block 12; Evergreen Cemetery, Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan on May 31, 1903. The name of his sister, Mrs. E.R. GETTY, was the former Mary Anna MacDonald who married Eli Robert GETTY.
