Genesee-Monroe County MI Archives Biographies.....Hoffman, Frank J. 1860 - ************************************************ Copyright. (1892) FRANK J. HOFFMAN is a rising young hardware merchant who is located in Fenton. He was born in Monroe, Mich., January 4, 1860, and is a son of Leopold Hoffman of Baden, Germany, a baker by trade who came to America early in the '30s. Our subject's father worked first at Buffalo, N. Y., for a few months and thence proceeded to Monroe, Mich., where he was engaged in his legitimate business. He finally added groceries to his stock in trade and later became a commission merchant, and by diligence and close application to his business he became quite wealthy. About 1874 Leopold Hoffman turned his business over to his two eldest sons and visited his native land for the second time. Before this he had confined his attention to his extensive real estate interests in Monroe, Detroit and Toledo. His wife was Stephania Lamlin, a native of Ohio. She died in 1872 at the age of forty-four years. Ten children were the fruit of that union, there being seven boys and three girls, all of whom are living. Our subject received a common-school education and in 1878 he entered the college of Notre Dame at South Bend, Ind., spending one year there. He then completed a course in the Goldsmith Commercial College of Detroit and in 1879 came to Fenton and engaged in the boot and shoe business. Two years later he was burned out and he then purchased a stock of hardware and since that time has successfully conducted that business. His predecessor was Mr. B. F. Stone, who was the pioneer hardware man of Fenton, but is now deceased. Mr. Hoffman carries a full line of hardware and has in connection with his store a first-class tin shop. He occupies a commodious, two-story brick building, which is well located and of which he is the owner. April 18, 1880, he was married to Miss Jenny Thompson, a daughter of the late Maxwell Thompson who came to Fenton in 1835 from New York. He was one of the largest land owners in Genesee County, having at the time of his decease, in 1888, about twelve hundred acres. He was originally a farmer but retired from the active pursuit of his calling in about 1869 and removed to Fenton. Our subject and his wife are the parents of five children whose names are Mildred, Leo Max, Tracy, Hiley and Willah, twins. Mr. Hoffman is a Democrat. He was for several years a member of the Town Council and for one year was Village Treasurer. Mrs. Hoffman is a Presbyterian in her religious sentiments. They have a very pleasant home which is the center of the social life of the vicinity. Mrs. Hoffman owns three hundred and seventy-five acres of choice land in Mundy Township. (1892) JAMES R. BORLAND. The agricultural calling has many representatives among the noble and high-spirited men in Juniata Township, Tuscola County. Among the most enterprising of these is he whose name appears above. He resides on section 5, where he is the fortunate owner of one hundred and sixty-five acres of excellent land. Besides this he owns two hundred and eighty acres in another portion of Tuscola County. He devotes his time to mixed farming. Our subject is the son of John and Mary (Robinson) Borland, natives of County Antrim, Ireland, where James R. was born January 7, 1834. Our subject was reared on a farm. His parents emigrated to America, and located in Niagara County, N. Y., in 1843, coming to Michigan in 1853, and locating in this township, which was then a wilderness. He purchased about two hundred and forty acres of wild land from the Government, which he cleared before his death, which took place about 1882. The subject of this sketch was happily married to Miss Sarah Jane Caul, March 16, 1863. She is a daughter of Lucius Caul, and born in New York. This union resulted in the birth of four children- Mary L., Ada M., Sarah C. and Margaret. They are all at home with their parents. Mr. Borland was one of a family of nine children, and of these four are still living. They are James R., William, Robert V. and Margaret J. Sherman. In politics our subject is a Republican. For nine years he has acted as Supervisor of the township, has also been Treasurer seventeen years, and has served on the School Board twenty-five years. Tuscola-Oakland County MI Archives Biographies.....Streeter, Dallas M. 1845 - ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Joy Fisher [email protected] June 2, 2007, 2:30 pm Author: Chapman Bros. (1892) DALLAS M. STREETER. One of the farmers, who has worked for the development of this portion of Tuscola County, is he whose name appears above. He was born October 21, 1845 in Brandon Township, Oakland County, this State, and is a son of Thomas and Judith (Rideout) Streeter. Our subject's grandfather, Elias Streeter, was a captain in the War of 1812, and received his commission from the governor of New York. He was a merchant in Rochester on the breaking out of that war. He became ah early settler in Oakland County and made his home with his children during his latter years, his death occurring in Tuscola County, when he was living with his granddaughter, Eliza Black. He was one hundred and three years of age at the time of his decease. Thomas Streeter was born in Monroe County, N. Y., in 1804 and was there married in 1836, coming immediately afterward to Michigan and settling in Oakland County, where he entered a tract of Government land and engaged in farming J in Brandon Township'. He came to Tuscola County in October, 1853, and entered one hundred and sixty acres of land in Juniata Township. In 1855 he sold this and entered one hundred and sixty. acres in Fair Grove which he improved. About 1870 he moved to Ellington and purchased eighty acres of land where he resided until the time of his death, in 1874. He was honored by election to several public offices. By his first marriage Thomas Streeter became the father of eight children-Aurilla (Mrs. James King), Eliza (Mrs. Black), Nancy (Mrs. Ames), Hiram, David, John T., Dallas M. and Benjamin. The second wife was Charlotte Luther nee Merrill, who still survives. Our subject was reared on a farm and received a common-school education. He came to Tuscola County with his father when fourteen years of age and began to earn his own living, working out by the month and receiving $10 for his labor. With what he managed to save out of this pittance he paid for eighty acres of land, to which his father had a tax title. In the fall of 1865 he purchased forty acres on section 23, Almer Township, and removing to this, cleared and improved it and has since added to it, forty acres on section 22, so that he now aggregates one hundred acres. On another page of this volume appears a view of his place which is beautified by a fine brick residence and capacious and well-filled barns. Mr. Streeter has made his own way in the world, all the outside help he has ever had being $100 received from his father's estate. He has served in various local offices and has been Commissioner of Highways. He is a Democrat of the strongest type. Mr. Streeter was married March 4, 1865, to Miss Sophia Northrup, who was born in Oakland County, Mich. and is a daughter of Noah and Hannah (Arnold) Northrup. Our subject and his wife have had three children-Daniel W., Melvin and Charlie. The last two died in infancy.
