Hakes, 93, of Concord, died Thursday, September 30, 1999, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. Mr. Hakes was born September 30, 1906, in Eckford to Ray and Bessie (Ansterburg) Hakes. He married Eva Raser August 25, 1928, in Concord. She survives. Mr. Hakes was a lifelong resident of the Calhoun-Jackson counties area. He was self-employed as a cabinet maker. He was well-known for making dulcimers and was also an international champion sheep sheerer. He was a member of the Concord Universalist Church for 71 years, a member of the Concord Heritage Association and a founding member of Uncle Carl's Dulcimer Club. He was a musician all his life. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Carl (Judy) Hakes II of Onondaga, and Daniel (Kathy) Hakes of Manchester; four daughters, Dr. Judith Hakes of San Angelo, Texas, Mrs. Stanley (Edith) Chapman of Mosherville, Trinka Hakes Noble of Bernardsville, New Jersey, and Mrs. Mike (Eva Martin) Clark of Hillsdale; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Helen Peck of Marshall, Dorothy Root of Concord, Louise Cook of Stockbridge and Roberta Ross of Berrien Springs. He was preceded in death by a son Howard; two brothers, Howard and Herbert; and a sister,Catherine Houghton. Private funeral services were held at the Concord Universalist Church with John Kinney presiding. Burial was in Fisher Cemetery in Homer Township. Funeral arrangements were handled by Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel of Homer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ruth Keefer Scholarship Fund in care of Eva Hakes. NOTE: No relation to family.
