Jr. Of Battle Creek Passed away Monday morning, September 20, 2004 at Fort Custer's Veteran's Hospital after a brief illness. George was born in Kanton, Ohio, on February 23, 1959. He came to live in Battle Creek in 1963. Here his "Mom & Dad" Clarence and Zora Brookmyer raised him. George was a happy, fun loving, and energetic child. George graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1977. He then attended St. Thomas Aquinas College in St. Paul, MN for two years. Those who knew George well also know that next to his love of his family was the love he had for his country and the Military. George proudly served in the United States Air National Guard's 110th at Fort Custer, for 25 years, until his retirement in October of 2003. George was a security officer for the Air Force. He proudly served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and on numerous other occasions. In George's tenure with the Air Force he was highly decorated and admired by all. He always gave everyone! the benefit of the doubt, and was always able to push his men and women to be the very best. George was preceded in death by his mother Zora (1986) and father, Clarence (1991). He leaves behind a large loving family, including his sisters, Mary Hesser of Kalamazoo, Jennifer Horn of Pompano Beach, FL, Jackie Macintyre of Denver, CO; and sister-in-law, Sandy Brookmyer of Union City. Also a brother, Garrett Brookmyer of Gull Lake survives. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, including three very special nephews, Todd Brookmyer of Battle Creek, Joseph Brookmyer Jr. of Fulton, and Jeff Brookmyer of New Boston, MI. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Phillips Catholic Church, Battle Creek at 10:30 Friday, September 24, with interment at noon at Fort Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. As cremation has already taken place, a celebration of George's life will immediately follow the burial at Garrett's home. In lieu of flowers! the family asks that a donation be made in George's name to the Disab led American Veterans. Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 9/23/2004.
